Conflict is the source of any drama. It is required to not only make the plot interesting but push the story forward. Some of the most captivating stories can be found in the relationships between characters and include couples you root for and who break your heart as they break each other’s.

No one wants to see their favorite couple fight, but when they do, its impossible not to watch. Some fights live on in infamy and beg to be watched again. For better or for worse, here are 10 couples that broke your heart time and time again.

10 Rick & Lori – The Walking Dead: Life At The Prison

They may not be the most scintillating couple on TV, but Lori and Rick Grimes from The Walking Dead did tend to fight. Whether it be about the direction Rick was taking the group or Lori’s massively bad personal decisions, the Grimes’ marriage always seemed to be on the rocks. Lori was usually the one accusing Rick of mistakes, but in season three, Rick finally had his comeback.

After the Greene farm went up in flames, Rick had to find a new location for the group. All with Lori close to giving birth. Lori and Rick’s multiple issues came to a head after Rick was forced to kill his best friend Shane. Lori wanted to talk to Rick about their relationship, but after what they had been through, Rick couldn’t put it back together. He responded with, “I’m doing stuff, Lori. Thangs.”

9 Willow & Tara – Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Willow’s Magic Addiction

The subject of Willow’s excessive use of magic was a sore subject, not just with her girlfriend, Tara, but for the entire group on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Her magic became so out of control that Tara told Willow to not use magic for one week.

Willow immediately went back on her word and when trying to make Tara forget their fight, as she had done many times before, she accidentally erased everyone’s minds. It was the catalyst that ended Tara and Willow’s relationship.

8 Eric & Donna – That 70s Show: The Promise Ring

Through three seasons of dating on That 70s Show, Donna and Eric’s relationship had highs and lows. Their ultimate fight came when Eric bought Donna a promise ring. Donna ultimately accepted it, not realizing she would be promising to be with Eric forever.

Donna realized that it was not a commitment she was prepared for. Eric couldn’t accept the fact that Donna had other dreams besides him. Donna gave him back the ring, terminating their relationship.

7 Veronica & Logan – Veronica Mars: Alibi For Lilly’s Death

The first fight always cuts the deepest. On Veronica Mars, Veronica and Logan had been at odds ever since Lilly Kane died. Veronica’s best friend and Logan’s girlfriend was the subject of much contention. While it seemed as though the killer had been caught, Veronica continued to investigate the crime. It wasn’t long before Veronica and Logan became closer.

Their first foray into their turbulent romance ended quickly when Veronica thought she found evidence that Logan was lying about his whereabouts when Lilly was killed. Logan realized this after he was taken in for questioning and angrily confronted Veronica at the beach, maintaining his innocence.

6 Buffy & Angel – Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Angel Turned Evil

Throughout the three-year whirlwind romance between Buffy and Angel on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, they had many memorable fights. They were the epitome of a tortured romance and this resulted in many tears. The most important occurred when they were technically broken up after Angel lost his soul.

Buffy and Angel finally caved to their baser instincts and consummated their relationship. The curse that had given Angel his soul was broken, making him a killing machine again. The most important altercation between Angel and Buffy was their literal fight after Angel became evil. Angel became Angelus and he correctly found that even though he was evil, Buffy wasn’t able to kill him. Even so, Buffy promised to return and finish the job.

5 Bill & Sookie – True Blood: Sookie Almost Died (Again)

On True Blood, Sookie and Bill had many arguments, mostly concerning their moral differences. After proposing to Sookie, Bill was kidnapped by a gang of werewolves belonging to the Vampire King of Mississippi.

Despite Bill trying to push Sookie away to protect her, Sookie ignored him and attempted to save him. Meanwhile, Bill was being tortured to death by his sire, Lorena. Sookie saved him but he was ravenous with lack of blood. Trying to save his life, Sookie fed him her blood but he became out of control, almost killing her. This was (one of) the last straws for Sookie and she couldn’t forgive him almost killing her.

4 Seth & Summer – The O.C.: Seth Likes The Chase

The O.C. was defined by Seth’s pursuit of Summer Roberts. And in season one, he finally got his chance to date her. This all ran amok after Seth’s best friend, Ryan, found out that he might be a father. Deciding to return to Chino with Theresa, Ryan left the Cohen family. Seth took this especially hard, knowing that he could never live in Newport without him.

Seth left Summer, as well as the rest of his family. Eventually he came back to Newport and tried to win Summer back. It all culminated at the Harbor School Carnival when he tried to lead Summer away from her new boyfriend, Zack. Summer rightfully had enough of Seth jerking her around. Seth only seems to want her when he can’t have her.

3 Marshall & Lily – How I Met Your Mother: Going To Art School

From episode one of How I Met Your Mother, Lily and Marshall were posed as the perfect couple. Together since the first day of college, they were never apart. This continued through the first season of How I Met Your Mother when they got engaged.

It all seemed that the season was leading up to their wedding until Lily started having second thoughts. Marshall found out that Lily applied to art school without telling him and their issues were brought to the surface with the iconic “pause-unpause” fight.

2 Chuck & Blair – Gossip Girl: Chuck Slept With Jenny

Fraught with angst from the very beginning, there was no couple on Gossip Girl quite like Chuck and Blair. On-again-off-again was a term seemingly created for these two. After finally confessing his love for Blair, Chuck continued to make mistakes. Their great break up resulted around the threat of Chuck losing the hotel he proudly owned. To keep a hold on to it, he bartered it for Blair, resulting in a painful break-up.

But that wasn’t the worst fight they ever had. The worst was the night Blair considered taking Chuck back. Fate was against them, as the very same night, Chuck slept with Blair’s long time rival Jenny. Chuck attempted to hide this from Blair, but as everything does on the Upper East Side, the truth came out. Blair left Chuck after the realization, not knowing that he had been planning to propose.

1 Ross & Rachel – Friends: We Were On A Break

Friends captured the hearts of its audience over its 10-season span. The largest draw was the relationship between Ross Gellar and Rachel Greene. They had a complicated journey, one with an unexpected pregnancy and at least two surprise trips to the airport. One of their most memorable stops on this journey was their breakup in season three.

Often referenced and never forgotten, Ross and Rachel hit a rough patch when Rachel found a new job at Bloomingdales. Ross’ jealousy got the better of the couple, resulting in a tearful fight. Ross slept with the girl from the Xerox shop, thinking that he and Rachel were on a break. It wasn’t long before Rachel found out and heartily disagreed with their relationship status.
