10 Movies That Reddit Users Think Should Be Remade

Movie remakes are a fickle concept. Some remakes are better than the original and completely overtake it in the cultural zeitgeist. In fact, some movie viewers may not even know that certain classics are remakes, such is the power of their quality and cultural impact.

But for the most part, remakes are both unwanted and unloved. They come and go without much attention or love and quickly fade into irrelevancy. But of course, there are certain movies that scream out for a remake, that demand to be updated and modernized. According to Reddit, these are those movies.

The Towering Inferno (1974)

The ’70s was home to a burst of disaster films, and these are still regarded as classics to this day. Even the best disaster movies of the last decade don’t hold a candle to these classics in terms of cultural relevancy.

The Towering Inferno was one of the most popular disaster films of its time, grossing over $200 million and receiving a staggering eight Oscar nominations. But Reddit user GDW312 believes it’s time for an update, writing, “Towering Inferno def deserves a remake.” It is nearly 50 years old, after all…

The Green Hornet (2011)

Sometimes movies are remade not because they are old and out of date, but because they were made wrong in the first place. This is the argument that Reddit user pquade makes for The Green Hornet, one of those so bad it’s good action movies that viewers can find on Netflix.

According to them, The Green Hornet should be remade “from KATO’s point of view.” It’s a good argument, as Seth Rogen was the undeniable star of the original, playing Green Hornet Britt Reid.

The NeverEnding Story (1984)

The NeverEnding Story has received a boom in popularity thanks to Stranger Things, so it’s a perfect time for a remake! Grossing $100 million in its original run, The NeverEnding Story was a solid hit and has amassed a generous cult following since its initial release.

Reddit user peteoneillbassnyc has a good idea, writing, “Neverending Story by Guillermo Del Toro.” A NeverEnding Story remake from Guillermo del Toro would be fascinating, and it would beautifully update the somewhat dated visuals for modern audiences.

The Running Man (1987)

The Running Man is one of the ’80s most popular achievements, and Jordan Peele is one of the greatest working directors. So why not combine the two? This is the idea of Reddit user geographicfap, who writes, “I would really like to see Jordan Peele do a modern remake of The Running Man.”

It’s unclear why they want Jordan Peele of all directors, but it’s likely due to his eye for violence and social commentary. Both are prevalent throughout The Running Man.

Flash Gordon (1980)

Reddit users love pairing movies with potential directors. Space opera Flash Gordon was released in 1980 to middling success. It performed moderately well at the box office but wasn’t a huge hit, and it received a good-but-not-great critical reception.

Luckily, it has since amassed a cult following and is great material for director James Gunn. At least according to Reddit user bluejester12, who wants, “James Gunn doing Flash Gordon.”

Treasure Island (1950)

Treasure Island is undeniably one of the best adventure films of all time. In fact, it is arguably the quintessential adventure film, and it helped popularize countless tropes that are now prevalent in the pirate genre. The fact that it hasn’t been remade is incredible.

Reddit user fcdrifter88 wants it, writing, “It’s my favorite book but the movie just isn’t that great, would love to see a remake that isn’t full of itself or over the top.” A remake is certainly in order, considering the original is over 70 years old.

Hellraiser (1987)

It’s sometimes fun to consider what a movie would be like if it had a higher budget. Reddit user Cagney68 wants a Hellraiser remake, writing, “I’d just like to see what an Ari Aster/Robert Eggers-type horror visionary could do with a more generous budget.”

The original Hellraiser was made on a paltry budget of just $1 million, but director Clive Barker certainly did what he could with the material. A Hellraiser with a more substantial bankroll would certainly be something to experience.

It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963)

Released in 1963, It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World starred all the greatest comic actors of its time. Unfortunately, it has now been 60 years, and most of these actors have been forgotten. Reddit user HardSteelRain thinks it would make for great remake material, writing, “It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World with today’s best comic actors.”

It’s a great idea, and it’s easy to imagine the star-studded cast on display. The movie was sort of remade with 2001’s Rat Race, but it just wasn’t the same.

The Warriors (1979)

The Warriors is undeniably one of the weirdest movies ever. As Reddit user farmerarmor states, “I can’t decide if I want realistic gang portrayal, or baseball bat wielding weirdos with painted faces again.” The Warriors didn’t do well upon its initial run, grossing just $22 million and receiving poor reviews.

However, its reputation has grown in recent years thanks to time, a critical reassessment, and a particularly popular video game from Rockstar. The ’70s cheesiness tends to ruin the movie for some. A modern remake is just what the IP needs.

The Last Airbender (2010)

The Last Airbender is widely regarded as one of the worst movies ever made, and it was an abomination for Avatar fans around the world. It desperately deserves a remake, solely because the original was so bad.

Reddit user VioletInADream wants to see an Avatar remake, writing, “if they can actually do a faithful adaptation and not another disastrous abomination.” A live-action Avatar could be incredible, provided it was given the right care, budget, and cast.
