10 Things About The The Vampire Diaries Universe You Wouldn’t Know Just By Watching Legacies

As a spin-off, Legacies excels in using the knowledge that its predecessors founded and pushing it forward without relying too much on The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. As a continuation, it is easy to watch and enjoy Legacies for what it is without being confused by history the previous shows have.

However, there are several references to The Vampire Diaries and The Originals throughout Legacies as a continual reminder that they all exist within one universe and to acknowledge characters that had been essential in the previous shows. While Legacies has separated itself enough for knowledge of the other two shows not to be crucial to explain what is going on, there are things within the universe that fans would never know just by watching Legacies.

10 Alaric’s Dark Backstory

While Alaric may appear to be a level headed father and Headmaster on Legacies, his backstory is much more complicated than that. Alaric had not merely been a vampire hunter turned school Headmaster.

He had not spent his entire life as a human at all. For a brief period in time, Alaric had been gifted the powers of an Original Vampire, for the intent to hunt vampires. Alaric had also been under the dark influence of being brought to life several times by the Gilbert Ring. He had even been dead for some time before being brought back when The Other Side was collapsing.

9 Full Extent Of Vampires

On Legacies, MG and Kaleb are the central vampires on the series. Given Legacies’ overall lighter tone, neither MG or Kaleb is reminiscent of the troubled vampires from The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. Due to that change, viewers have yet to see the lengths vampires are capable of going.

While fans have gotten a taste of a Ripper and the Humanity Switch from MG and Jade, and a confident, laid back attitude from Sebastian, Legacies has not gone deeper. Being a Ripper or being without humanity has severe repercussions for vampires as people, shown consistently by Stefan Salvatore and several others. Legacies has also yet to show a newly turned vampire and the emotions and changes that come from adjusting to the heightened senses and abilities.

8 Salvatore Name References

The school name, Salvatore Boarding School, and library, The Stefan Salvatore Memorial Library, hint to the significance of the school’s location. The Salvatore Boarding School was once the Salvatore Boarding House that Damon had given up to Alaric and Caroline to turn into a school for the supernatural.

The library was named after Stefan Salvatore, who had given his life for Mystic Falls. Kaleb and MG referenced diaries about being a vampire that had likely been written by Stefan throughout his life. In season two of Legacies, Landon’s dorm room is a renovated portrayal of Stefan’s bedroom.

7 How Hope’s Parents Died

Hope’s parents, Klaus Mikaelson and Hayley Marshall, each died to protect Hope during two separate occasions. Hope’s status as a Tribrid was threatening to various characters, but when Hope’s life came close to ending, Hayley jumped to save her daughter, burning in the sun without her Daylight Ring.

Later on, after Hope breaks her werewolf curse, Klaus decides to remove the Hollow from Hope. To accomplish that, he got help from Josie and Lizzie Saltzman to siphon the Hollow from Hope and place it into Klaus. Klaus went through with the ritual, knowing that to destroy the Hollow, he would need to die.

6 Mikaelson Family History

Hope comes from a large family with plenty of enemies and many stories. Legacies alone would not have the time to repeat every single thing Hope’s relatives had done. Alaric briefly mentions Klaus’ temper, and there is a short reference to him being “The Great Evil.” Other episodes acknowledge Hope’s family in alternate universe scenarios, but none of them were formally introduced on Legacies until Freya Mikaelson appeared during the second season.

Yet, even Freya being alive was a secret to Elijah, Klaus, Rebekah, and Kol. Freya had been given to her Aunt Dahlia, and the two practiced magic together as Freya grew up. Over the years, the two would be asleep for a century before spending one year awake to explore the world before going back to sleep. After Freya met her siblings in New Orleans during The Originals, she broke the spell and continued to be an essential part of the show.

5 Original Immortals

Hope stems from the Mikaelson family line, known to be the Original Vampires. The Mikaelsons have been alive for over a thousand years and were known to be the oldest living people in existence and the first immortals. However, that is not the case. The first immortals were Silas, a powerful witch, and Amara, the love of his life.

A tragic ending to a love triangle was the key to The Cure, The Other Side, and the Doppelgangers of Silas and Amara continued to exist on Earth ever since Ancient Greece. Amara was the initial anchor to The Other Side, which was later transferred to Bonnie Bennett. To create vampires, Esther Mikaelson used the blood of Tatia, a Petrova Doppelganger.

4 Caroline’s Significance

While her name has been brought up several times on Legacies, she has yet to arrive at the Salvatore School. It was explained that Caroline was off in Europe, searching for a way to prevent the Merge between Josie and Lizzie. Without watching The Vampire Diaries or The Originals, viewers would not understand the impact Caroline has had in the universe.

Notably, her relationship with Klaus Mikaelson. The dress Lizzie gives to Hope for the Miss Mystic Falls Pageant during “Let’s Just Finish This Dance” was originally a gift Klaus gave to Caroline.

3 Origins Of Vampires

Just as the explanation of how people turn into werewolves is explained, so if the transition into a vampire. Yet, Legacies has not given the background detail into where it all began. Over a thousand years before, vampires were created by a witch with the intent to protect her family.

The Mikaelson family suffered a tragedy when their youngest member, Henrik, died due to werewolves. In response, Esther Mikaelson created a more vigorous race to compete with werewolves, turning the rest of her children and husband into the new supernatural creatures. Klaus and his siblings would later discover that they could transform other people into vampires as well.

2 Bennett Blood

To use the ascendant, Josie and Lizzie needed the help of other witches and Bennett blood. Bennett blood was the only way to create and escape a Prison World under ordinary circumstances. Mystic Falls has a history of Bennett witches that have practiced magic.

Just like Caroline, Bonnie is mentioned a variety of times. The history of Bennett witches was a heavily included part of The Vampire Diaries, and Bonnie’s involvement was a significant part of why the Mystic Falls gang was able to win confrontations successfully. Bonnie Bennett, Josie, and Lizzie were responsible for placing Kai Parker in the Prison World he was trapped in during Legacies.

1 The Dark History of Both Predecessors

Legacies has a much lighter and comedic tone than The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. In comparison, each previous show has been significantly darker in its storytelling and mood. It was much more often expected to see fan favorites die in the blink of an eye or watch as someone bled out. Manipulation and emotional turmoil were a regular part of each show. However, a lot of angst came from years of guilt.

Characters like Stefan, Damon, Katherine, and the Mikaelsons had years of guilt from previous actions weighing them down that would come back to haunt them. Each could play fast and loose with character deaths more often.
