With Q4 2021 being the biggest quarter for gaming conversation on Twitter, the gaming community flocked to Twitter to discuss 2021’s biggest video games, one of the biggest being Genshin Impact. In a blog post, Twitter shared 2021’s most tweeted about video games, with miHoYo’s Genshin Impact generating a particularly large amount of conversations and impressions. Additionally, Genshin Impact‘s subreddit was the most viewed on Reddit in 2021. The games tweeted about encompassed everything from video game news and updates to esports events, and popular streamers and content creators.

In total, there were 2.4 billion tweets about gaming in 2021, which is a huge 10x increase from 2017. Despite being one of the biggest and most successful games of 2021, the highly-anticipated Halo Infinite didn’t make the top ten most tweeted about games. Japan was the country that tweeted the most about gaming, so it’s not surprising to see several incredibly popular Japanese games on the list. Mobile games also make multiple appearances in the top ten, testament to their ever-growing popularity.

One game that didn’t make 2020’s most tweeted about games list, so was a new addition for 2021, is Minecraft. This volume of tweets is largely thanks to the communities of popular Minecraft content creators on Twitch and YouTube, like Dream, Twitter’s fifth most tweeted about gaming creator of 2021. The majority of the video games included in 2020’s most tweeted about games stayed on Twitter’s list for 2021, with the exception of a couple of Japanese mobile games. Project Sekai, also a Japanese mobile game, was new to the list for 2021, like Minecraft.

Fortnite Drops To 10th Place In 2021’s Most Talked About Games

Despite rumors that Fortnite is losing its popularity, with a massive 80.4 million monthly active users and up to 4 million concurrent players every day, Epic’s title continues to be the most popular battle royale game on the market. However, Fortnite dropped from number five on 2020’s most tweeted about games to number 10 on 2021’s list. This may be due to Fortnite’s younger fanbase, whereas Twitter is reportedly primarily used by adults over 18. Fortnite attracts a younger demographic than other battle royale games, with Fortnite’s youngest pro player being eight years old. Regardless, Fortnite continues to thrive, just not as much as it used to on Twitter.

Project Sekai Colorful Stage Feat. Hatsune Miku is a mobile rhythm game released in late 2020 by SEGA and Colorful Palette, and is a spin-off from Sega’s Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA series. While the game is free to play, it relies on in-game gacha transactions to acquire new characters, similar to Genshin Impact. Within six months of launch, Project Sekai had amassed 5 million users and reached the top 10 rhythm games on the App Store by the end of 2021.

2011’s Minecraft was a new addition for 2021, not featured in the previous year’s most tweeted about games list. However, it’s not surprising to see Minecraft on the list, as Minecraft Twitch and YouTube content creators were trending on Twitter on a daily basis throughout 2021. 2021 marked Minecraft’s 10 year anniversary, in which time the game has amassed over 141 million active players worldwide.

The popularity of Minecraft and content creators that exclusively create Minecraft content continues to grow, four out of the 10 most tweeted about content creators in 2021 were Minecraft streamers and YouTubers. The dedicated Minecraft online community continues to grow rapidly, and Minecraft‘s popularity shows no sign of slowing down any time soon.

Battle Royale Knives Out Is 2021’s Seventh-Most Talked About Game

Knives Out is a popular battle royale game for mobile that was downloaded over 250 million times in its first year. Knives Out was released a year prior to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds mobile version, PUBG Mobile, which touts itself as the best battle royale mobile game. Although PUBG Mobile surpassed 1 billion mobile game downloads last year, neither PUBG nor PUBG Mobile made 2021’s most tweeted about games list, making Knives Out the most tweeted about mobile battle royale game of 2021.

The release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons in March 2020 quickly became the most popular game ever released for Nintendo Switch, overtaking the legendary Nintendo game Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild.
