A Teen Titans Icon Has a Dark New Design Thanks to Deathstroke

This article contains a preview with potential SPOILERS for Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths #5

The Teen Titans‘ resident shapeshifter Beast Boy has a new, dark look thanks to the Titans’ arch-nemesis, Deathstroke. The two enemies have faced off numerous times over the years, from the classic story The Judas Contract to their most recent encounter in Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths. Now Beast Boy and Deathstroke are more connected than ever, given Beast Boy’s just-revealed design detail.

The connection between Deathstroke and Beast Boy has existed for practically as long as the Teen Titans have been battling the super-powered mercenary. Deathstroke’s latest threats have come in the pages of DC’s massive event book, Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths, where Slade Wilson has been possessed by the corrupted Great Darkness and is now leading a massive army of supervillains in coordinated attacks against worldwide heroes. In Dark Crisis #1 by Joshua Williamson, Daniel Sampere, Alejandro Sánchez, and Tom Napolitano, Deathstroke confronts Beast Boy outside of Titans Tower. In order to send a message to the other heroes, he shoots Garfield in the head, seemingly leaving him for dead. In more recent issues of Dark Crisis, Beast Boy is revealed to be alive, but comatose and psychically struggling with the trauma of the shooting.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Beast Boy will be back in action sooner than fans might think. In a reminder for the Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths #5 final order cut-off deadline, Joshua Williamson tweeted a preview image from the upcoming issue. The image shows a squad of legacy heroes running towards whatever battle faces them next. The heroes include classic Titans such as Nightwing, Donna Troy, Cyborg—and Beast Boy, back in action. Gar returns with a major new design detail, though: he now sports an eye-patch across his right eye.

No doubt Beast Boy fans will be relieved to see this major Titan back in action and clearly eager to fight back. This preview image confirms that Gar won’t stay down for long, but even more interesting is his new design detail. When Deathstroke shot Gar in Dark Crisis #1, most fans assumed it was the first true casualty of this major event. Though Beast Boy is clearly still alive and kicking, his head and eye injury, as marked by the new eye-patch, makes him a visual echo of his enemy and almost-killer, Deathstroke. Though Slade Wilson is often thought of as Nightwing’s arch-enemy, one could argue that Beast Boy’s encounters with Deathstroke—especially in classic Titans stories like The Judas Contract—have far more intense emotional stakes.

The history between Deathstroke and Beast Boy makes this new design element all the more interesting, and it should make Beast Boy and Titans fans eager to see where Garfield Logan’s story is going next. Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths has been a fast-paced and action-packed story focusing on the “legacy” theme and history across the DC Universe. It’s clear from this preview that this focus—and especially the focus on the Teen Titans’ legacy—will continue as the story draws closer to its climax and conclusion.
