A Valheim Player Is Rebuilding Fable 2’s Massive Fairfax Castle

Viking survival game Valheim is slowly but steadily turning into another Minecraft as players are going all-in on building stuff. For instance, like one player who made a massive replica of Fable 2’s famous Fairfax Castle. Currently a work in progress, the castle will join a whole family of other famous strongholds already envisioned in the crafting/survival game.

Quite recently, Valheim’s indie developer, Iron Gate Studios, requested the craziest builds from the Valheim community. As expected, players immediately rushed to show off their most impressive projects, which included a handful of well-known fantasy castles and palaces. One gamer demonstrated an amazing copy of The Game of Thrones’ Winterfell, which was built in a snowy area for the sake of authenticity. A different kind of project was presented by another player who created a faithful representation of The Lord of the Rings’ Edoras.

A talented Valheim builder named _-GH05T- on Reddit has recently revealed a dream project they are working on. The player is building a ridiculously massive replica of Fable 2’s best available property, Fairfax Castle, and the resemblance is uncanny. Even though there are minor discrepancies here and there, the overall result is as close to the original fortress as possible. According to the player, the massive castle was built in Debug mode, which is similar to Creative modes in crafting/survival titles. Since Fairfax’s replica in Valheim is extremely large, the game suffers from a severe performance drop due to a large number of building assets involved. The author admits that the FPS count has already dropped to 18 – and that’s only the exterior of the castle finished! It’s painful even to start imagining how slow the game will run once the interior design is complete. Despite that, a massive keep at the top of a mountain should not affect the player’s world at all since it is being built far away from the main survival area.

It appears that Valheim players love Tolkien’s legacy infinitely, as apart from attempting to recreate Minas Tirith, Barad-Dur, and Edoras, they are also investing time in smaller builds. One particular fan decided to replicate Bilbo’s under-the-hill residence, which is a complicated task considering players can’t dig holes in Valheim. The builder, however, came up with a brilliant idea to turn the front door of Bilbo’s house into a portal, which led to the rest of the property located elsewhere.

Although Valheim incorporates a sophisticated building mechanic, the game suffers from the inability to support a large number of building assets in one place. This is probably the key reason why players don’t even try to exceed the reasonable limits in a regular survival mode. There isn’t much sense in making huge builds that can affect performance, but as a purely creative initiative, Valheim’s Fairfax Castle is definitely among the most admirable projects in the game so far.
