All Layers Of Fear Endings (& How To Get Them)

Layers Of Fearhas three possible endings for players to unlock, so here’s how to get them all. First-person horror games have become a popular subgenre in recent years, with 2014 bringing both Alien: Isolation and P.T. The former was a direct sequel to the original Alien, with Ripley’s grown daughter Amanda trapped on a decaying space station with a relentless, unkillable Xenomorph. Isolation perfectly captured the atmosphere of the movie and proven to be one of the most terrifying games of recent years. P.T. was a teaser for sequel Silent Hills, which was created by Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro.

Despite P.T.’s short length, its been very influential on the genre thanks to its suffocating atmosphere and dread. Sadly, Silent Hills was later canned and the demo was withdrawn by Konami. Other games in this subgenre include Outlast and even Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, which drew heavy inspiration from P.T. while reinventing the series. Another acclaimed title is 2016’s Layers Of Fear, which follows a disturbed painter in a dusty old mansion as he works on his magnum opus. Players follow his descent into madness as his paintings seemingly come to life and his past comes back to haunt him – quite literally.

Layers Of Fear will probably only take most players a few hours to beat, but it’s possible to unlock three different endings. Here’s what they are and how to get them.

Loop Ending

Throughout Layers Of Fear, players discover the painter’s obsession with his work and alcoholism led to him destroying his marriage, his relationship with his daughter and his career. His intended masterpiece is a portrait of his beautiful wife, and in the “Loop” ending he completes it, but it soon decays into a monstrous figure. He then tosses it into a room filled with identical portraits that all laugh at him.

The Layers Of Fear “Loop” ending finds him setting up another canvas where he will continue to paint the exact same picture in search of perfecting it. To get this ending, players should only trigger one wife death scene and only pick up essential items that are needed to progress the plot.

Self Portrait Ending

Layer’s Of Fear “Self Portrait” ending has the artist painting a portrait of himself instead of another of his wife, which is later hung in an art gallery, suggesting he finally overcame his obsession. To get “Self Portrait,” don’t approach the painter’s wife and don’t push the wheelchair in the hallway.

Family Ending

Layers Of Fear’s final ending is the “Family” option, where the artist adds his daughter to the painting too. He realizes all the horrible mistakes he’s made and that he can’t undo them, so he lights his painting on fire and sits to burn along with them. To achieve this ending, always go to the painter’s wife, pick up family mementos and push the wheelchair.
