American Horror Story: Why Ally Killed Ivy In Cult

In one of American Horror Story‘s biggest twists to date, Ally Mayfair-Richards killed her wife, Ivy, despite being the weak-willed figure from Cult. Sarah Paulson portrayed the complicated character for American Horror Story season 7 while her on-screen spouse was played by series newcomer, Alison Pill. Cult followed members of a fictional suburb in the aftermath of the 2016 Presidential Election when a cult started terrorizing the community.

The Mayfair-Richards family was one of the victims of the clown cult — specifically, Ally. She and her wife were already dealing with tension in their marriage caused by Ally’s various phobias re-emerging. Seeing as they were the mothers of a young son named Oz, the pair tried to get Ally’s anxieties under control for the sake of the entire family. Unfortunately, it turned out that Ivy was an active member of the cult with ulterior motives focused on her wife’s mania.

The fact that Ally was the one who gave birth to their son remained an aspect that caused jealousy in Ivy for the years that followed. She was bothered by the fact that Ally and Oz seemed to have a stronger bond. There was already a sense of resentment when Ally’s vote for the third-party candidate, Jill Stein, increased the tension among the couple. With a shared interest in feminism, Ivy formed a friendship with Winter Anderson, which in turn led to them joining the cult started by Winter’s deranged brother, Kai. From there, Ivy was manipulated by Kai, resulting in more terror aimed at Ally. After Ally was forced to spend time in a psych ward against her will, she realized that Ivy was trying to permanently take away her son. She then infiltrated Kai’s cult, and successfully poisoned her wife after understanding Ivy’s motivations.

Ally Was Motivated By Oz’s Well-Being In Cult

In time, Ally started to overcome her various phobias, leading her to find the strength to join the clown cult. The void left by her cured phobias was then filled by her rage aimed at Ivy. Despite the trouble Ally caused, it was Ivy who gave Kai the opportunity to enter their family’s lives. More importantly, it was Ivy’s fault that Kai encountered their son and endangered the boy’s young life. The cult would have been one thing, but Ally couldn’t look past the fact that Ivy wanted to take Oz away from her, especially since it threatened his well-being.

Rather than let the cult’s plan play out—which could have exposed Ivy’s true motive—Ally surprisingly took action well before American Horror Story: Cult came to an end. Even Ivy didn’t see it coming, since she didn’t believe her wife could truly overcome her phobias. This proved that Ivy always underestimated Ally, and it eventually led to her demise. Coincidentally, Kai also didn’t prepare for Ally as a viable threat, seeing as she was the one who rose to power before eliminating the cult leader for good.
