Animal Crossing’s Least Profitable Items Revealed By Data

Those looking to turn a profit in Animal Crossing: New Horizons ought to steer clear of reselling the wrong items, and new data shows exactly which ones make for bad investments. Some of these items aren’t what Animal Crossing players might expect, but they just don’t have much of a financial gain when trying to resell them to other players.

While there are plenty of great ways to make money in New Horizons, like participating in the turnip-based Stalk Market, many have taken to outside sources like the Amazon-inspired website, Nookazon, to sell certain items far above their in-game selling price, acquiring more bells or even Nook Miles Tickets from other players. Yet there are some pieces many would expect to have a high return on investment (ROI) that simply do not.

Real-world lending website CashNetUSA recently compiled data showing what New Horizons items have the lowest ROI when attempting to resell them on Nookazon, so players can avoid trying to resell them there. A majority of items with the lowest ROI are art pieces – very surprising, considering the patience involved in waiting for Jolly Redd’s Treasure Trawler to make an appearance on one’s New Horizons island.

What Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ Least Profitable Items Are

According to CashNetUSA, the Robust Statue has the worst ROI out of all items in the game. Apparently, this is for both the real and fake pieces, although this data looks at reselling on Nookazon specifically, so it’s not to say someone else outside of this website wouldn’t pay more for it. Two New Year clothing items, the New Year’s Hat and the New Year’s Silk Hat, which are both obtained during New Year’s Eve, tie for second-worst ROI. As New Horizons released last March 2020, the only way for players to get these items is to time travel, making them decently rare for now. Perhaps a majority of players simply aren’t aware these New Year’s Hat variations exist, which is why there isn’t a high demand for them.

The next three items with the worst ROI are more art pieces: the Gallant Statue, the Motherly Statue, and the Rock-Head Statue, which all tie in third place. Again, it doesn’t matter if these pieces are fake or genuine. What’s even more surprising is CashNetUSA also lists these items fairly high up as being some of the most valuable in Animal Crossing, yet they are also some of worst items in regards to a return on investment. The way CashNetUSA collects its data is by looking at an item’s resell value on Nookazon and a community data spreadsheet for New Horizons, which lists all in-game item prices. Items with the smallest difference between buying and selling pricese make up the lowest ROI.

Still, it seems odd that some of these hard-to-obtain items would have the lowest ROI in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Again, other players would be likely willing to pay more outside of Nookazon. Users also have the option to auction off certain items and even villagers on that website, so prices can certainly vary.
