Archer Season 10 Episode 8: Woodhouse’s Surprise Cameo Explained

Here’s the shock appearance by Woodhouse in Archer season 10 episode 8 explained. Archer is an animated sitcom following the title character, his co-workers and his mother Mallory, played by the late, great Jessica Walter. Seasons 8 to 10 really played around with the series template, which takes place in the aftermath of Archer being shot and falling into a coma. Season 8 was dubbed Dreamland, where Archer imagined himself as a hard-boiled private detective, with all the key people in his life appearing as reimagined versions of themselves.

Archer: Dreamland also saw him “avenge” the death of partner Woodhouse – which was really Archer’s subconscious dealing with the death of his butler Woodhouse. This was also the show’s way of paying tribute to Woodhouse’s voice actor George Coe, who passed away in 2015. Season 9 Danger Island was an adventure series featuring the show’s twisted brand of humor, while Archer 1999’s “Bort the Garj” introduced season 10’s new sci-fi theme.

Archer: 1999 took the show’s characters and dropped them into a retro future reminiscent of 1970’s sci-fi adventures like Alien. It was fun series – if not exactly the show’s best – but Archer season 10 episode 9 “Robert De Niro” finally saw the title character awaken from his coma trilogy. Prior to this, some longtime viewers were getting restless with the show’s long diversion into dreamland, though Archer season 10 episode 8 “Cubert” gave a good indication that was about to come to an end – especially with a surprise cameo by Woodhouse.

Archer season 10 episode 8 opens with the gang recovering a strange, cube-like object with reflective properties, in what feels like a nod to Michael Crichton’s Sphere. It soon goes missing and the crew hunt for it, but Archer’s sense of reality starts to break down as he pictures the others dressed in the way they use to be back in reality. His sense of what’s real or fantasy breaks down to the point that he tries to murders Lana with a rolled-up magazine, in a surprisingly visceral scene that pays homage to Ash trying to kill Ripley in Alien.

Archer season 10 episode 9 then sees the title character thrown in the brig, and after launching a tirade against the crew, he turns to see Woodhouse sitting next to him with a cocktail. It’s a startling moment, especially after the show had seemingly retired the character after Dreamland. All this version of Woodhouse says is “Yes sir” or “No sir,” but it’s an indicator that Archer’s private fantasy is close to ending. It was also kind of emotional seeing the old butler again, even for such a brief scene.
