Are Studio Ghibli Movies On Netflix? Where To Watch In US & Canada

Netflix has acquired the rights to stream Studio Ghibli movies, but will they be available worldwide? Netflix has a variety of content for all ages and tastes, and even though it adds new movies and TV shows every week, not all of them are available worldwide. With the streaming wars heating up as more and more subscription services arrive, acquiring the rights to stream popular titles has become a battle, prompting users to subscribe to different platforms in order to have access to as many movies and shows as possible.

Still, Netflix continues to be the go-to option when it comes to streaming platforms, with many popular movies and TV shows available to stream, such as titles from the James Bond collection and two movies from the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Of course, there are still many popular movies that the streaming giant hasn’t been able to add to its catalogue, among those the movies from the Academy Award-winning Japanese art house, Studio Ghibli.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The beloved and critically-acclaimed studio is home to movies like My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, and Princess Mononoke, among many others. Fans of Studio Ghibli have been waiting for the day the movies are available to stream, and it’s finally happening… though not everywhere and not at the same time.

Studio Ghibli Movies Are On Netflix, But Not In US Or Canada

Netflix is adding all movies from Studio Ghibli starting next month – but not in the U.S., Canada, and Japan. The movies will be subtitled in 28 languages and dubbed in up to 20, and will be available to stream in Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. The first wave of Ghibli movies will arrive on February 1, among those Castle in the Sky and My Neighbor Totoro, with Netflix adding more on the first day of each month until April. Meanwhile, Hayao Miyazaki continues working on How Do You Live?, based on the book of the same name by Genzaburo Yoshino, expected to be released before the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Where To Watch Studio Ghibli Movies Online

The reason why the U.S. was excluded from the Netflix deal is because HBO Max already has the streaming rights for Studio Ghibli movies. WarnerMedia’s streaming service will launch in May and it will have all 21 movies available, so fans will have to wait a bit longer to binge watch the whole Studio Ghibli library, though many of them are available to buy or rent on Amazon, Youtube, Google Play, iTunes, Microsoft, and Vudu. As for Canada, HBO Max doesn’t have a projected launch date, and the movies are not available to stream anywhere else – but many of them are available to rent or buy on different services.

Castle in the Sky and Grave of the Fireflies are available on iTunes, along with Kiki’s Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, Pom Poko, and Ponyo, which are also available on Microsoft Store. Ocean Waves, My Neighbors the Yamadas, and Spirited Away can be found on iTunes, Google Play and Youtube, while The Cat Returns can only be found on Google Play and Youtube. Tales From Earthsea is available to buy on Microsoft, as well as The Tale of Princess Kaguya (which can also be found on Google Play and Youtube). Whisper of the Heart, Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, and When Marnie Was Here are available on iTunes, Google Play, Microsoft, and Youtube. Though it’s easier to have all Studio Ghibli movies available and ready to go in one place, these options are better than nothing – at least until HBO Max expands to other countries.
