Batman’s Court of Owls Enters the DC Animated Universe With a Twist

Spoilers for Batman: The Adventures Continue Season Two #1 ahead!

The Court of Owls has entered the DC Animated Universe—with a shocking twist. The Court has made life miserable for Batman and his allies over the years and now it is set to cause havoc in the DC Animated Universe as well, and this new version of the Court has a few new tricks up its sleeve as well. Readers can see the new Court of Owls in action in Batman: The Adventures Continue Season Two #1, written by Alan Burnett and Paul Dini, with art by Ty Templeton and Monica Kubina. Initially appearing as a DC Digital First, the print issue is on sale in stores now.

Batman: The Adventures Continue is set in the same continuity as the immensely popular Batman: The Animated Series and while it continues many of the storylines from that show, it has introduced newer concepts to the Animated Universe, and the Court of Owls is the most recent addition. The Court of Owls was created by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo and became one of the most popular storylines of DC’s New 52 era. Consisting of members of Gotham’s most elite families, the Court controls Gotham from the shadows and uses specially trained assassins named Talons to carry out its will.

The Court makes a grand debut, killing Gotham City mayor Hamilton Hill. After Hill’s daughter describes the killer as owl-like, Batman begins investigating the Court of Owls, learning of its history and connection to Gotham history. Batman’s investigation gets an assist from Deadman; he also draws the attention of the Court, who dispatches a Talon to take care of him. Deadman has two close encounters with Talon, and it is clear Talon can not only see Deadman, he can hurt him as well. Furthermore, Deadman is unable to take possession of Talon, and ultimately Batman must turn to Zatanna for help.

Much of the Court’s mainstream DC Universe modus operandi has translated over to the Animated Universe, such as conspiracies and assassinations, but with a twist: the Talon is able to resist supernatural attacks, as well as see ghosts such as Deadman. These abilities were not present in the original version of the Court or its Talons. Not only does this provide a cool twist that makes this version unique, it actually makes the Talons scarier as it means supernatural attacks may not work against them. This means the Dark Knight and his allies must find other ways to stop the Court.

The Court of Owls was a highlight of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Batman series; a frightening presence looming over Gotham. Now that the it can repel supernatural attacks in the DC Animated Universe, the Court of Owls is even more frightening than before.
