Below Deck Med: Everything To Know About Charter Guest Roy Orbison Jr.

Roy Orbison Jr. is a repeat charter guest on Below Deck Med and he has quite an interesting backstory, which we’re going to share with fans of the nautical reality show today. Viewers met Roy for the first time during Below Deck Med season 5. He and his family flew to Spain for a luxury superyacht vacation on The Wellington. Hannah Ferrier was the chief stew on the series for the first five seasons, and she didn’t mind having the kids on board, as motherhood was something she had been wanting for a long time.

During their first time on the Bravo series, the whole crew seemed to enjoy the company of the Orbison family. In fact, they left the crew quite a large tip. However, this year, the Orbison family seems to be a bit rowdier (especially Roy). Their first dinner on the boat included Roy getting completely blackout drunk. He almost jumped ship as the deck team was getting ready to dock. Even Roy’s wife was fed up with his antics.

So who is Roy Orbison Jr.? Well, the guest on the show that some people think has “jumped the shark” is the youngest son of the late musician Roy Orbison. His late mother Barbara Orbison was a German-born businesswoman, who was married to Roy Sr. from 1969 until his untimely passing in 1988 (via the Roy Orbison Jr. website). Roy Jr., who was on multiple seasons of Below Deck Med, was born in Nashville but moved to England, where he lived until he was five. He later called the back of a tour bus home. Not only is his father an icon in the history of rock music, but his godparents are the late Johnny Cash and his wife June Carter-Cash. He developed the same passion as his father for music as he is currently a producer and guitarist. Roy also runs a publishing company that honors the legacy of his father’s talents and his iconic catalog.

Roy is currently the president of Still Working Music Group, a Nashville-based music publisher, which is home to hit songwriters for musicians such as Luke Bryan, Celine Dion, Maren Morris, One Direction, and more. After losing his mother to pancreatic cancer in 2011, the recently dramatic charter guest Roy Jr. had a rough time getting over such a huge loss. In 2013, he found himself sitting in a park while visiting Stockholm, Sweden, which is where he met his now-wife, Asa Hallgren. The couple tied the knot in June 2017 on the steps of the cabin owned by Johnny Cash, close to where Roy grew up. The pair have welcomed two sons, Roy Orbison III and Bo Orbison. They currently reside in Los Angeles but frequently travel the world, such as when they rent yachts on Below Deck Med.

Even though Roy Jr. got out of control with his drinking on the latest episode of Below Deck Med, he is still beloved by the fans. His wife and two boys are so sweet and respectful of the team; Roy’s drunken antics can be forgiven. Hopefully, he or his family isn’t too embarrassed, as the viewers would love to see them back on the boat next season.

Below Deck Med airs Mondays at 9 pm EST on Bravo.
