Big Hero 6 Sequel Baymax TV Show Coming To Disney+

Disney is developing a new Big Hero 6 TV series, titled Baymax, exclusively for Disney+.  This will be the second Big Hero 6 animated series, following Big Hero 6: The Series on Disney XD. Big Hero 6 initially released in theaters in 2014, loosely adapting characters from Marvel’s comic series of the same name.

The movie tells the story of Hiro Hamada, a teenage robotics prodigy living in the futuristic city of San Fransokyo. After losing his brother in a tragic accident, Hiro joins a crew of fellow young tech-specialists who eventually become a valiant superhero squad. Hiro also helps restore Baymax, a robot guardian created by his late brother. The film won numerous awards and accolades in 2014, including the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

According to Disney, Baymax! will premiere on Disney+ in 2022, though little else has been revealed about the series. The title itself and the preexistence of Big Hero 6: The Series (which is still running) suggests it will be more of a spinoff than a direct sequel to the original film’s story, though it’s also unknown how the two shows will connect. Given that Disney Animation Studios will be developing Baymax! directly, it will likely adopt the 3D animation style of the studio’s recent films, rather than the more cartoony look of the current show.

The world of Big Hero 6 is undoubtedly vast and compelling enough to tell more original stories within its walls. Baymax’s status as a more kid-friendly comic-relief character means the new series will likely target a younger audience than even the initial film. If that turns out to be accurate, Baymax! could be a cornerstone of and trendsetter for future young-audience original programming on the platform.

Of course, that’s still conjecture. While Disney set the world abuzz with a considerable number of new announcements for their streaming future, it will likely be some time before more concrete details are released. At the very least, new Big Hero 6 content is excellent news for fans of the universe and a promise of sorts that the franchise will continue to be valued and promoted by Disney. With luck, maybe Fall Out Boy will come back to do the theme song for Baymax!
