Black Panther 2 Shouldn’t Have A Villain (Because It Can’t Beat Killmonger)

The Marvel Cinematic Universe can’t top Erik Killmonger, so Black Panther: Wakanda Forever should forget about having a villain. Though Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa debuted in Captain America: Civil War, Marvel’s Black Panther truly introduced him to the MCU. The film and Boseman’s performance became worldwide phenomenons. The movie earned more than $1.3 billion at the box office and went on to win three Academy Awards. Black Panther also made Oscar history, becoming the first superhero film to earn a nomination for Best Picture. Following Boseman’s tragic death in August 2020, fans flooded social media with Wakanda Forever salutes, celebrating the move that the actor made iconic in the film.

Black Panther 2 raises several MCU questions. First, following Boseman’s death, Marvel announced that it wouldn’t recast T’Challa in the film. Because of that, it’s unknown whether or not there will be a new Black Panther in the movie. If so, could Shuri (Letitia Wright) become the new Wakandan superhero? As T’Challa’s sister, Shuri is a leading candidate to take over the position and lead the country. Additionally, Marvel keeps details about the film under wraps, so the new villain’s identity is a mystery. However, there are rumors that Tenoch Huerta could fill the role as Namor the Sub-Mariner.

Despite the antagonist possibilities, the Black Panther sequel should probably avoid a traditional villain. In Black Panther, Michael B. Jordan’s Erik Killmonger often steals the show. He’s got charisma, charm, and a mean streak from which fans couldn’t look away. Killmonger may be an MCU villain, but he also makes solid points. Killmonger is angry Wakanda has turned its back on the Black community worldwide, and he wants to take over the country to help liberate others. His message changes the hero, making T’Challa realize that Wakanda needs to open up to the world. Killmonger is an antagonist fans could root for, and his magnetism has inspired endless theories that the character will return. Because of Killmonger, Black Panther 2 should forget about trying to add a compelling new villain. However, there are other possibilities.

T’Challa followed some of Killmonger’s ideas, and that’s not going to sit right with everyone. In a Black Panther mid-credit scene, T’Challa reveals Wakanda and its technology to the world, likely creating turmoil from traditionalists in the African nation. After all, there’s a reason Wakanda was secretive and closed off for so many years. The new ruler of Wakanda will likely need to address these issues in the upcoming film. In place of a traditional villain, insurrectionists present a unique threat.

Namor is another opportunity. The MCU will likely allow the character to become an antihero, much like the Atlantean is in the comics. Because of this, it’s doubtful the upcoming Black Panther: Wakanda Foreverwill treat him like a traditional villain. Instead, it’s possible Wakanda’s openness affects Atlantis in some negative way, and the new ruler of Wakanda will have to show Namor the Sub-Mariner why T’Challa’s decision was the right one. The move would keep traditional villains out of the film rather than bring in someone audiences will compare to Killmonger. It could also serve as one last tribute to Boseman’s iconic character.
