Black Widow Deepfake Video Imagines Emily Blunt In The MCU

A deepfake video imagines what the Marvel Cinematic Universe would look like if Marvel’s original choice for the role, Emily Blunt, had taken on the mantle of Black Widow. The Marvel role eventually went to Scarlett Johansson, who debuted in the MCU in Iron Man 2. She’s made the role her own, appearing most often alongside Captain America in Winter Soldier and Civil War and forming part of the Avengers through all four films in the franchise. Black Widow’s shocking and controversial death in Avengers: Endgame was one of the most emotional scenes in the MCU. However, Johansson isn’t done yet, reprising the role in her own solo film, Black Widow, currently scheduled for release in November.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

It wasn’t always meant to be Johansson in the role. Blunt was the studio’s first choice, almost appearing before a clash with Fox’s Gulliver’s Travels forced her to remove herself from contention. The British actor, who is famously married to The Office‘s John Krasinski, has had a long and successful movie career since making a splash as Emily Charlton in The Devil Wears Prada. Krasinski was also at one point in contention for the role of Captain America, but the couple have since said they’re glad they weren’t cast in the MCU due to the restrictions placed on movie choices while tied to a contract.

However, that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating what the MCU would have looked like with Blunt playing Black Widow instead. YouTuber Shamook has taken it one step further and created a deepfake video so they don’t have to imagine anymore. Blunt’s face replaces Johansson’s in a number of iconic scenes from Black Widow’s time in the MCU, from her introduction in Iron Man 2 all the way up to her confrontation with Captain Marvel in Avengers: Endgame. Check out the incredibly convincing deepfake video below:

Like in all deepfakes, Johansson’s voice remains intact, lending an eerie aspect to the footage, but the visuals are incredibly convincing. It’s strange to see Blunt in the iconic scenes, but does show that she wouldn’t have been entirely out of place in the MCU. The actor proved her action chops in Edge of Tomorrow alongside Tom Cruise, and there’s no doubt she would have brought her own interpretation to the character of Black Widow.

Though, Blunt joining the MCU would have denied audiences the opportunity to see her in a number of iconic movies, including Edge of Tomorrow. The same could be said of Krasinski’s atmospheric horror hit A Quiet Place, as well as its upcoming sequel. It’s also worth noting Johansson owns the role, so at this point it’s difficult to imagine anyone replacing her and becoming iconic enough to carry a solo film like Black Widow.
