Bohemian Rhapsody 2 Is Being Considered, Says Queen’s Brian May

Queen guitarist Brian May says Bohemian Rhapsody 2 could still happen, but only if it has a really great script. Few could have predicted that one of the biggest movies of 2018 would be a rock and roll biopic about the late, great Freddie Mercury (played by Rami Malek) and Queen, yet Bohemian Rhapsody exceeded all expectations. Grossing nearly as much as MCU installment Ant-Man and theWasp domestically and a boatload more internationally ($904 million in total), Bohemian Rhapsody became an audience favorite when it arrived and led to a resurgence in popularity for Queen and their music. It even went on to be nominated for 5 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

At the same time, Bohemian Rhapsody was far from a critical darling, instead earning mixed reviews. There was even some backlash when Bohemian Rhapsody won Best Editing at the Oscars, further cementing its place as one of the more polarizing films in recent memory. And yet, there have been some rumblings about a sequel since it premiered. Various people have commented on the possibility of a Bohemian Rhapsody 2 in recent years, but it’s mostly been to debunk the idea.

At least, until now. While speaking on an Instagram Live (via NME), May, one of the original members of Queen, once again touched upon whether Bohemian Rhapsody could earn a sequel. May stopped short of outright guaranteeing it would happen, but admitted that the concept is being looked at. Since the first was so beloved, a second would have to be really great. May said:

“We are looking at it. Yeah, we have been looking at ideas. It’s going to be hard to follow that one as none of us could have predicted how massive that was going to be. We put a lot of heart and soul into making it and no one could have predicted [its success] as it was bigger than Gone With The Wind. But yes, we are thinking maybe it could happen, but it would have to be a great script. It’s going to take a while to figure that out.”

The first question that comes to mind when considering Bohemian Rhapsody 2 is: What would it even be about? The first movie charted Queen’s origins and followed the group up until their iconic Live Aid performance in 1985. Much of Bohemian Rhapsody focused primarily on Mercury and his personal struggles, as well as his creative highs. A sequel could perhaps bring the attention closer to the other members of Queen, though it would likely still have to touch upon Mercury in some way. It could also explore the years after Live Aid and before Mercury’s death in 1991.

Of course, May’s comments don’t mean that Bohemian Rhapsody 2 is a done deal. It sounds more like some ideas are being tossed around, and only when the right one sticks will a sequel be made. As May said, the first Bohemian Rhapsody resonated so much with audiences that one has to wonder why a sequel is required at all. Sure, audiences might enjoy seeing the cast reunite for a new Queen movie, but the highlights were already covered before. Perhaps we should wait for more details about a potential Bohemian Rhapsody 2 before passing judgement on what it will be like.
