Book Of Boba Fett: Who Plays The Mod Artist (Where You’ve Seen Him Before)

Warning: the following contains SPOILERS for The Book of Boba Fett.

The Book of Boba Fett has finally revealed the person behind the modded cyborgs on Mos Espa, and the character is played by an actor who might be familiar to some fans of the Star Wars franchise. Indeed, surprising cameo appearances from both Star Wars characters and other famous people in the real world are to be expected in The Book of Boba Fett. In the case of The Book of Boba Fett season 1, episode 4 “Chapter 4: The Gathering Storm,” one famous musician’s cameo also serves as their acting debut in the Star Wars universe.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The said episode sees Boba (Temuera Morrison) emerging from a bacta tank seemingly for the last time, as a droid congratulates the Mos Espa daimyo for finally fully healing from his injuries due to the sarlacc pit. As with the prior episodes, Boba’s time in the bacta tank leads to dreams and flashbacks to before Boba took on a leadership role in Mos Espa, with extensive scenes of Boba roaming the deserts of Tattooine. This includes scenes that explain how Boba found and saved the life of former Imperial assassin Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen), whom Boba found with a stomach wound and left for dead in the sand. Boba saves Fennec’s life by bringing her to the mod artist who seems to be responsible for the cybernetic enhancements on the Mods that Boba hired in The Book of Boba Fett season 1, episode 3 “Chapter 3: The Streets of Mos Espa.” As Fennec is brought back to life, Boba earns a powerful new ally, and it’s all thanks to the mod artist.

The Book of Boba Fett‘s mod artist is played by Stephen Lee Bruner, who is more famously known as the singer and virtuoso soul bassist Thundercat. Many might recognize him from the music video for his song “Dragonball Durag,” which has garnered 17 million views on Youtube. In 2021, Thundercat was awarded the Grammy Award for Best Progressive R&B Album for his album It Is What It Is. Music icon and Don’t Look Up cast member Ariana Grande has also collaborated with Thundercat on a version of Thundercat’s hit song “Them Changes,” which aired on Adult Swim. Although The Book of Boba Fett is technically Thundercat’s onscreen acting debut, he’s definitely no stranger to the limelight. Apart from appearing in several music videos, Thundercat is also highly acclaimed for his work with artists like Erykah Badu, Flying Lotus, and Kendrick Lamar, who has described Thundercat as the creative epicenter of his own Grammy-nominated R&B album To Pimp A Butterfly.

Apart from being a low-key legend in funk and neo-soul, Thundercat is also famous for his eclectic and colorful wardrobe, which he often uses to convey his love for anime, sci-fi, and fantasy. Throughout Thundercat’s music career, he has become a niche fashion icon in his own right. All of this makes Thundercat perfect for the role of the mod artist who was responsible for outfitting The Book of Boba Fett‘s mod culture-inspired biker gang. Moreover, now that it’s been revealed that he is the same mod artist who saved Fennec Shand’s life by giving her a cybernetic torso, Thundercat might reappear onscreen soon to repair or modify his work, as Boba and Fennec are bracing themselves for the gathering storm that is the imminent war in Mos Espa.

The Book of Boba Fett certainly made the right call for casting Thundercat for the role of the mod artist. Apart from drawing new fans to the franchise, Thundercat seems to have genuinely enjoyed acting out the role, which bodes well for the series if the mod artist becomes a returning character. As cameo appearances from the likes of Thundercat and veteran actor Danny Trejo serve to increase the anticipation and enjoyment for the new episodes of The Book of Boba Fett, audiences can expect more of these surprising cameos in the show’s future.
