BOTW 2 Is Going To Ruin All Your Hard Work

When The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 releases, Link will set off on another journey with a fresh beginning. While it seems unlikely he’ll start the sequel with amnesia again, he certainly won’t be allowed to carry over the equipment and heart containers that players obtained in Breath of the Wild. With all the hours that can be poured into an open-world game, losing all that progress can seem unfitting in terms of storytelling.

The still untitled sequel will follow BOTW, an open-world Zelda title with a vast map and plenty of content for players. BOTW 2 is scheduled to release in 2023, and there’s not much known about the characters who will be included or what the plot will be like. There are several characters whose return would make sense in BOTW 2, such as Demise from Skyward Sword.

Regardless of the content of BOTW 2, it’s a safe assumption that Link will be back to having the typical three heart containers at the start of the game. Of course, it would be too easy from the game design standpoint if Link is able to keep all the equipment that players earned in BOTW. But for players, the result of a clean start is the loss of hours of gameplay, and not every game gives a reason in the plot for the loss of power and equipment.

Trailers for BOTW 2 show Link with a new arm, and they’ve revealed a broken Master Sword as well. Having a solid plot reason for Link’s abilities dropping after completing BOTW can help make the shift feel less like a loss of all the time a player has put into the game. A change such as an issue with his arm provides an opportunity to give a reason as to why Link’s progress has been erased, and the way that he acquires his new arm could have forced him to take a break from heroics to recover and left his skills a bit rusty.

In BOTW 2, Link will be off to explore floating islands with a new sword, arm, and the ability to move through solid material. The trailer has introduced several mysteries, such as Link’s Master Sword being broken in BOTW 2, and so far there are no answers as to how this happened. Breath of the Wild was a well-received game, and players have logged countless hours in Hyrule with it. Now, they’ll lose all their hard work in BOTW in order to continue Link’s adventure in Breath of the Wild 2.
