Candyman 2021: What Would Happen If Brianna Told Everyone

The final scene of Candyman 2021 ends with Daniel Robitaille (Tony Todd) instructing Brianna to “tell everyone,” an action that would have severe ramifications in the current Candyman canon. Nia DaCosta’s reimagining of the supernatural slasher has garnered immediate attention from critics, particularly praising its blend of taut social commentary with riveting horror. The highly reviewed Candyman movie is also on course to be a box office success, having already recouped its entire budget in its opening weekend globally.

The events of Candyman 2021 have an inexorable pull about them as Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Anthony McCoy descends into the clutches of the hive despite the efforts of his girlfriend Brianna (Teyonah Parris). The writing is already slung upon the walls before McCoy is physically mutated, then spiritually transformed into the ethereal embodiment of a downtrodden community’s righteous rage.

If Brianna does follow Robitaille’s instruction and tells “everyone” about the existence of Candyman, DaCosta’s Candyman timeline (assuming it continues) would warp around this nexus event. Tony Todd’s Candyman draws his power from being uttered into the world, and so being on the lips of millions would, in theory, multiply his power and summonings exponentially. The spread of the knowledge of Candyman would also allow the legend to grow beyond Cabrini Green, creating a divisive scenario where more disparate souls are inducted into the Hive.

While Robitalle’s insistence Brianna tells everyone is primarily intended to act as an allegory for social justice and speaking hard truths, she assumedly would also be intent on proving Candyman‘s existence. Brianna has an epiphany in the back of the police car after Anthony is shot on sight. This realization, coupled with the detective’s attempted blackmail, causes her to summon a different incarnation of Candyman, who is empowered by her belief. If Brianna was to spread the word of Candyman passionately, it is logical that the hook-handed specter’s powers would increase. Candyman draws his power from spoken word, so Brianna’s story is bound to increase the number of times “Candyman” is repeated into mirrors around Chicago. The film series canon established in Candyman 2: Farewell To The Flesh shows Daniel Robitaille deriving immense powers such as rebirth and flight from the New Orleans natives that worship him, and so spreading the word of Candyman on an unprecedented scale would ensure more Candyman appearances and lots more bloodshed.

The legend of Candyman traveling beyond Chicago’s Cabrini Green would also cause interesting conflicts within the Hive. Five of the six named hive members share multiple common threads, with the biggest ties being the racial injustice surrounding their deaths and their geographical links to Cabrini Green. Helen Lyle is the only hive member to buck this trend somewhat, although she too was unjustly persecuted and eventually became a confidant of Robitaille before joining the swarm. One of the key goals of DaCosta’s Candyman Hive is to recruit men killed in racially motivated crimes and avenge their deaths, with the Hive working towards a common goal. However, if the Candyman legend moves beyond Cabrini Green, the Hive will assumedly diversify. In the original Candyman movies, members have been shown to act on selfish motives, such as Robitaille, who pursued his descendants in Farewell To The Flesh, ultimately leading to the Hive’s destruction. While DaCosta is yet to divulge more information on the Hive hierarchy, the swelling of its ranks would no doubt lead to internal conflicts down the line.

The word of Candyman moving beyond Cabrini Green also opens up tantalizing new possibilities for DaCosta and Jordan Peele’s vision to continue. Although there is no word on a sequel, Candyman 2021’s ending left the door wide open for a direct continuation. Assuming Brianna spreads the Candyman word, DaCosta and Peele would have new cities and new communities to have the Hive descend upon, with new yarns to spin as a result. Currently, the Candyman 2021 movie leaves an indelible warning that the hook-handed presence will return to punish those who profit from the dismissal and suffering of Black culture. Saying his name 5 times in the mirror will conjure ghosts of the past, and Brianna’s coda as a vehicle for Candyman‘s message carries as much weight in both the titular setting of Cabrini Green as it does in the real world today.
