Charlie Cox Responds to Favorite Spider-Man Actor Question

Daredevil star Charlie Cox discusses which Spider-Man actor is the best following Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s returns in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Cox starred as attorney-at-law Matt Murdock in Netflix’s hit series, Daredevil, whose nighttime endeavors see him earn the title of “The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen.” Following the series’ cancellation, many were left unsure as to what the future could hold for Cox’s character, as a direct link between Netflix’s Marvel shows, including Jessica Jones and The Punisher, and the MCU had yet to be fully established. Fans were therefore delighted to see Matt Murdock step in as Peter Parker’s lawyer in Spider-Man: No Way Home last year, opening up a whole new future for the much-loved vigilante.

Cox’s appearance within the film was just one of the exciting (and heavily rumored) cameos that has helped Spider-Man: No Way Home earn more than $1.8 billion at the worldwide box office. As well as welcoming back previous Spider-Man villains, such as Doc Ock (played by Alfred Molina) and Green Goblin (played by Willem Dafoe), No Way Home saw the much-anticipated returns of Spider-Man alumni Maguire and Garfield. Teaming up with Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, the pair helped him understand the true meaning behind putting on the Spider-Man suit, all while attempting to take down a multiversal lineup of villains that had slipped into the MCU.

Seeing the trio together on the big screen sparked a lot of discussion as to which of the three Spideys was the best, and now Cox offers the perfect response. During a recent appearance at the Middle East Film & Comic Con (shared by Reddit user, u/theeshivy,) Cox was asked which of the Spider-Man actors was his favorite, to which he replies that he “can’t answer that,” before arguing a case for each of them. The actor jokes that his real-life friendship with Garfield was the reason behind his somewhat coy answer, praising each of the stars for what they individually bring to the role. Cox speaks to Garfield’s acting ability, Maguire’s status as the “original,” and Holland’s age, joking that both Garfield and Maguire are “grandpas.” Check out Cox’s full quote below.

I’m sorry. I can’t answer that. Andrew is one of my best friends. Look, Tobey’s the original, Andrew is one of the greatest actors of a generation and one of my best friends, and Tom is the right age. Do you know what I mean? Like with all respect to the other grandpas, his youthful energy, and his naivety and his excitement is like, ‘Yes!’ Do you know what I mean? All three of them bring something incredible to that role. So, good question.

Given the overwhelming success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, rumors have been swirling of some possible future appearances from both Maguire and Garfield, but as of right now, nothing has been confirmed. Following Daredevil‘s recent transition from Netflix to Disney+, many are hoping that this could mean that Marvel are now prepping for Matt Murdock’s full integration into the MCU. Cox has opened up about his joining the film franchise on a number of occasions, revealing that, while he doesn’t know much, he knows that “something else” is coming.

Cox’s admiration for each of the Spider-Man actors is certainly sweet and echoes the sentiments of many fans who feel that all three stars bring their own unique traits to the role of Peter Parker. Although the scope of both Peter 2 and Peter 3’s futures post-Spider-Man: No Way Home remains shrouded in mystery at this stage, it would certainly be exciting to see Cox cross paths with his real-life friend in the MCU one day. As for now, perhaps Cox’s argument for each of the Spideys will help settle the debate.
