Chucky Episode 6 Creates A Major Andy & Kyle Plot Hole

Warning: SPOILERS for Chucky season 1, episode 6.

Chucky episode 6, “Cape Queer” marked the official return of Andy Barclay and Kyle — but inadvertently created a plot hole around the killer doll’s nemeses in the process. Played by Alex Vincent and Christine Elise respectively, Andy and Kyle are two of the longest-serving members of the Child’s Play franchise. The former debuted in the original 1988 movie, serving as Chucky’s inaugural “friend to the end” before returning for multiple sequels. Kyle joined the chaos after Andy was sent to foster care in Child’s Play 2. Both were last seen during the Cult of Chucky movie’s ending, which directly set up the TV show.

After making his way to Harrogate Psychiatric Hospital to help Nica Pierce (Fiona Dourif) defeat Chucky (Brad Dourif) for good, Andy was ultimately bested. In a rare move, Chucky emerged victorious against his foes. In addition to trapping Andy in a cell, the doll escaped by possessing several different forms — including Nica herself. Chucky episode 6, “Cape Queer” confirmed Andy had since escaped and reunited with Kyle and the duo had made it their mission to kill every iteration of Chucky. That fact was dramatically shown in the cold open when they tracked one of the multiple killer dolls lurking in Chucky to Charleston, South Carolina. As cool as the moment was, it also created a plot hole.

Fleeing both the scene and a no doubt traumatized family after violently dispatching “Charlie,” Andy finally connected with the show’s teen protagonist Jake Wheeler (Zackary Arthur). After a brief phone call, Andy and Kyle welcomed him to the Chucky survivors club and vowed to make Hackensack their next port of call but therein lurked a problem. Why weren’t Andy and Kyle already in Hackensack or at least en-route? As Chucky viewers may recall this wasn’t the first time Andy and Jake spoke. After the once oblivious teen tried to sell Chucky online, Andy was Jake’s caller in Chucky episode 1. As such, Andy and Kyle should have already known, from the online ad, Jake’s number or both, there was a potential Chucky to investigate in Hackensack, New Jersey.

Furthermore, based on his original chat with Jake, Andy was clearly scouring for traces of Chucky online. After the advert and initial call, the extensive reports of murders and “tragic accidents” in Hackensack should have further had Andy and Kyle’s Chucky-Senses tingling. In their trip to Charleston in Chucky episode 6 “Cape Queer,” it was made clear they were investigating a doll who hadn’t drawn much attention. Even the family in possession of “Charlie” noted nothing untoward had been happening. As such, if Andy was still able to track him, then Hackensack Chucky should have been no problem — given the high-profile chaos he’d unleashed across several Easter Egg-packed Chucky episodes.

Chucky episode 6, “Cape Queer” even established Andy and Kyle’s knowledge of Charles Lee Ray extended to an awareness of Hackensack being his hometown. It, therefore, made even less sense they hadn’t gone there straight after the phone call in the Chucky series premiere. Making it even worse is that Andy made his initial call and traveled to South Carolina from Rhode Island. A cursory glimpse at a map would reveal that Andy and Kyle likely must have passed close to Hackensack during their drive. As such, the fact they didn’t at least offer a quick sweep en-route undermined the fiercely capable, Winchester-style Chucky hunters they’ve become.

All that being said, such plot holes and fresh inconsistencies did little to offset the twisted fun and shocking developments offered by Chucky episode 6. Plus, following the reference to Seed of Chucky’s Glen/Glenda and the return of Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) and Nica-Chucky, most fans were likely just glad to have more blasts from the past turn up. Equally, the confrontations that are now in motion on Chucky will likely be worth a little more suspension of disbelief regarding Andy and Kyle’s exploits.

Chucky releases new episodes Tuesdays on SyFy.
