A few weeks ago in a Weekend Wrap Up we brought you news that Kate Hudson had signed to star in the romantic comedy Something Borrowed. To be honest that should have been the end of it; we reported that the film would soon be ushered into existence and our duty of letting you know about it was fulfilled.
Then something odd happened. The film started casting for supporting roles and suddenly Colin Farrell is in talks to join the film which has now gone from being another Kate Hudson rom-com to… well, another Kate Hudson rom-com with potential.
Something Borrowed is an adaptation of the first novel in a series by Emily Giffin (a romantic comedy with franchise potential!) – here’s a quick synopsis of the book via Collider:
“Since elementary school, Rachel and Darcy have been best friends, with Darcy always outshining Rachel. While single Rachel is the self-confessed good girl, an attorney trapped at a suffocating New York law firm, Darcy is the complete opposite, a stereotypical outgoing publicist, planning a wedding with the handsome Dex. After Rachel’s 30th birthday party, she knocks back one drink too many and winds up in bed with Dex. Instead of feeling guilty about sleeping with her best friend’s fiancé, Rachel realizes that Dex is the only man she’s really loved, and that she’s always resented manipulative Darcy.”
In Luke Greenfield’s film, Ginnifer Goodwin will play Rachel, Hudson will star as Darcy and Colin Egglesfield will portray Dex. Meanwhile The Office star (and one time Captain America hopeful) John Krasinski will play Ethan, a friend of Rachel. Farrell is in the frame to star as Marcus, a friend of Dex.
Geeze, talk about complicated.
Regular Screen Rant readers will know that I’m something of a champion of Farrell’s work (and it’s not just because we’re both Irish.) I feel that he’s having something of a career resurgence. Something Borrowed is going to need a bit of extra spice if it wants to be more than a traditional romantic comedy and Farrell’s casting as a spiky best friend could just be what is needed. Farrell can do comedy as anyone who has seen the brilliant In Bruges can attest to. If you haven’t, buy it now!
I’m curious as to where this leaves Farrell’s possible standing on Consent To Kill. He was in the frame alongside Gerard Butler and Matthew Fox to headline the action film. It is possible that he could fit his supporting role in Something Borrowed around it, or possibly before it starts shooting in the coming months.
