Cruella De Vil’s 10 Best Costumes In The Live-Action & Animated Movies, Ranked

Cruella De Vil may be one of the most conniving and devilish Dinsey characters, but fans will agree she does it all with style. Her look from 101 Dalmatians is classic, with her white fur coat. Glenn Close’s live-action version took Cruella’s fashion to a new level and had fans awestruck.

Apart from her original evil plan of using dalmatians to make fur coats, Cruella had the mind to become a fashion icon. The 2021 live-action origin movie, Cruella, gave fans even more to gasp at, as Estella (Emma Stone) turned into the fashion-forward and daring Cruella, who wanted to seek revenge and make a name for herself.

10 The Classic Animated Cruella

Cruella was first seen in the animated version of the 1961 movie, 101 Dalmatians. Animator Marc Davis was solely responsible for the character and her iconic big fur coat that matched her ginormous personality. In the movie, Cruella wears an off-white fur coat over a simple black slip dress with a cigarette holder and heels.

While the look became synonymous with the character, it didn’t have the same level of detail or pizzazz that’s seen in the live-action versions. The animated look gave a more disheveled and maniacal look to Cruella, especially seen when she is driving!

9 Cruella’s Black & White Office Look

To transform Glenn Close into the fashion killer known as Cruella, Oscar winner Anthony Powell and Barbara Matera had to bring pizzazz and heavy glamour to the character. This meant Cruella had to always be seen in striking outfits, even at the office. In the live-action version of 101 Dalmatians, Cruella arrives as House of De Vil wearing a black and white ensemble.

Clad in black fur and a hat and veil, Cruella strutted her way into her office. The real showstopper was her form-fitting long blazer dress with pointed shoulder pads and high neck. To add some sexiness, the dress had a leg slit and was embellished with black and white beading.

8 The Zebra Fur Coat

Cruella is daring no matter what she wears. She defines the phrase, “Evil never looked so good.”In the first live-action movie, Cruella visits Anita at her home wearing a full-length black and white fur coat that’s cinched at the waist. Of course, it’s zebra fur with faux mink sleeves.

What makes Cruella’s looks pop even more is her use of color. She always wears a red lip, long red gloves, and coat sleeves that are lined with red fabric. And her look has a unique detail on the chest that appears to be silver and black ammo cartridges that mimic the look of medals.

7 The Fitted Red Dress

Fans of the Disney animated and live-action character finally got an origin story in the 2021 movie, Cruella. From a young age, Cruella had an eye for fashion, but she soon becomes rivals with one of the top designers, Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson). To upstage her, Cruella arrives at her party in a white cape.

But the real showstopper was her neat trick. The party has a black and white dress code, but Cruella has other ideas. She lights the cape on fire to reveal a reconstructed cherry red dress. Two-time Oscar-winning costume designer Jenny Beavan and costume maker Ian Wallace took inspiration from Charles James’s “Tree” dress that dates back to 1955.

6 The Black & Red Fur Coat

In 102 Dalmatians, Cruella is once again after the dalmatian puppies for her twisted idea of making a fur coat out of them. There are many memorable looks from the movie, but none stick in fans’ minds quite like Cruella’s black and red fur coat near the end of the movie. Anthony Powell created a coat that was big, luxurious, and totally Cruella.

It’s an interesting scene to watch, as Cruella tries to capture puppies while wearing the coat. What made the coat stand out was Cruella’s accessories. She wore a full-neck diamond necklace that covered her exposed chest, with matching earrings. For even more exaggeration, Cruella also wore a red and black feather headpiece.

5 Cruella & Feathers

Cruella dabbles in all types of fabrics, furs, and even feathers. When she meets her henchmen to acquire her new fur, she emerges from her full white bedroom. Cruella was a show stopper in a V-cut, mermaid-style dress in a black shiny fabric, while the neckline is done in half white and half black feathering.

The drama doesn’t end there, though, as the dress has long train sleeves. Both sleeves are lined with black and white feathers and Cruella wore sheer polka dot gloves to tie everything together. And, of course, no one can forget her iconic red cigarette holder.

4 The Garbage Dress

Cruella really pushed the boundaries of edgy and risky fashion in the movie, Cruella. One look that was fascinating to see unfold on the big screen involved a garbage truck. Pulling up to the venue, the truck dumps what looks like old and ratty fabric. But amongst the fabric emerges Cruella in a fitted corset bodice dress.

The dress has a unique flare, as Cruella used newspaper articles of her past events as detailing. What really sets the look apart is when she drives away and the disregarded fabrics prove to be a long train. Fans also can’t stop gawking at her hair and makeup.

3 The Beaded Red Dinner Dress

In 102 Dalmatians, Cruella tries to play along with everyone believing she’s cured of her obsession. She hosts a dinner party and invites guests along with their dogs. Besides her real devious plan for the event, Cruella dazzled in a big red beaded dress.

It’s the first look that’s entirely red instead of Cruella’s typical black and white. She doesn’t disappoint, as the dress has a slight poof skirt with a train. The top is off the shoulder but has a mesh chest fabric that helps hold on to the queen-like collar. The dress made Cruella look sinful, devilish, and if she was wearing fire.

2 The Punk Army Jacket

Cruella gave fans everything they wanted in dazzling and shocking ensembles that pushed the envelope of fashion. Cruella set out to upstage the Baroness in the fashion industry as a form of payback for what happened to her mother and one of her jaw-dropping looks that gained attention was her army jacket-inspired dress.

Set amid the punk-rock revolution of 1970s London, her look was dark, daring, and edgy. The army jacket had a plethora of accessories made of different metals. To add to the drama, Cruella created an incredibly long ruffled red chiffon train. If you look closely, fans will notice that Cruella even wears shiny black Doc Martens.

1 The Dragon Look

In 102 Dalmatians, Cruella goes to visit a designer known for working with fur. But what viewers couldn’t stop talking about was her dragon-embellished look. The look became one of Cruella’s best looks, as it had impeccable and intense detailing.

Cruella wore a fitted suit-dress. Her shoulder pads were hand-threaded dragon heads. The real gem was the back of her look that displayed a full-body dragon with its tail winding down Cruella’s back. No look is complete without its accessories, though, and Cruella carried a muff with her that had just as much detailing and the rest of her outfit. The devil really is in the details.
