Dance Moms: The 10 Most Heartbreaking Competition Losses

Abby Lee Miller is known for putting together iconic dance routines that often take first place at dance competitions all over the world. Of course, they can’t all be winners. Over the course of eight seasons of Dance Moms, there have been some heartbreaking competition losses that have caused tears for the dancers, the Moms, and even the fans.

Whether it’s the choreography that caused the routine to suffer, or the dancer forgot the routine and ran off stage, some routines just don’t cut it. Keep reading to find out the 10 most heartbreaking competition losses in the history of Dance Moms.

10 Nia’s “They Call Me Laquifa”

This was definitely a heartbreaking loss for fans considering how much work Nia put it into her “They Call Me Laquifa” routine, regardless of her mom’s reservations. Holly wasn’t a big fan of Abby typecasting Nia, but she let her go through with the questionable routine anyhow.

Nia didn’t miss a beat and flawlessly executed the choreography given to her but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to impress the judges. Many fans believe that this dance wasn’t challenging enough for Nia and the loss was ultimately due to poor choreography.

9 Chloe’s “Missing You”

Abby is known for putting an extreme amount of pressure on her dancers. For instance, during season one, Abby gave Maddie the week off and told Chloe that this was her chance to prove herself. Throughout the week she continued to put Chloe under pressure by comparing her to Maddie and enforcing a “win at all costs” mentality.

Chloe’s mother even got into a heated debate with Abby over her treatment of Chloe prior to the competition. Unfortunately, the routine didn’t place and fans continued to watch Abby put down Chloe for the remainder of the episode.

8 Mackenzie’s “Shoulda Coulda Woulda”

It’s impossible to not love young Mackenzie’s jazz solos. This is why it was so hard for fans to watch her routine not place during a season two competition. While the younger Ziegler’s dance was adorable, it wasn’t necessarily flawless.

This specific competition took place at a gym rather than an auditorium and Mackenzie shared that the gym floor was much more slippery than a typical stage. This could easily be the reasoning behind Mackenzie’s routine scoring low. Either way, this routine is still a winner in fans’ hearts.

7 “Moulin Rouge” Group Dance

This competition loss was one that both the Moms and fans saw from a mile away. During this particular week, Abby split her dancers into two group routines. She definitely gave more attention to the other routine and left “Moulin Rouge” to be choreographed by a guest instructor.

The Moms complained throughout the episode that this dance wasn’t getting enough attention from Abby and when it came time for the competition results, it was clear the Moms were right. Unfortunately, Abby put the blame on the dancers and told them that they “weren’t ready to compete in LA.”

6 “Electricity” Group Dance

Abby’s methods have always been a bit unconventional but she definitely took things too far with this specific routine. It fueled plenty of drama for the episode as it wasn’t exactly age-appropriate and the Moms made their opinions known. The judges at this competition also made it clear that dance routines like this one were not welcome as they scored the routine exceptionally low.

This competition loss was hard to watch as it easily could have been avoided had Abby listened to the Moms’ concerns and given the girls more appropriate costumes and choreography.

5 Maddie’s “In My Heart”

Fans were heartbroken when Maddie ran off stage in the middle of her “In My Heart” routine. Maddie had forgotten the dance and ran off stage crying. She begged production to let her do the dance again, knowing that Abby was going to be furious with her. Surprisingly, Abby was understanding and actually comforted Maddie in her time of need.

Unfortunately, this caused drama between the Moms and Abby for the remainder of the episode. They claimed that this showed favoritism since Abby had never comforted their daughters like she comforted Maddie.

4 “Snapshot” Group Dance

This was a rather uncomfortable routine to watch. The season one episode featuring this dance revolved around Brooke and guest dancer, Brandon, working together. Abby knew the pair had previously dated so she was hoping for plenty of on-stage chemistry and even sent the two dancers on a date to encourage this.

Unfortunately, Abby didn’t get the fireworks she was looking for. It was clear that Brooke was uncomfortable dancing with Brandon during the competition performance which made the entire routine look unnatural and forced. Ultimately, the group dance didn’t place and Abby was furious.

3 Kendall’s “Masked”

Abby has been known to nit-pick at Kendall for her lack of facial expressions. Her reaction to Kendall’s performance of “Masked” made it obvious to viewers that Abby was not happy with Kendall’s face during the routine. While Kendall did appear to nail the solo’s choreography, facial expressions can be just as important when it comes to winning over the judges and gaining those extra points.

It was definitely disheartening when Kendall didn’t place with this dance and it was even more heartbreaking to watch the aftermath of the loss.

2 JoJo’s  “Straighten Up”

This competition loss was a pretty surprising one. Abby gave JoJo this routine to help her “straighten up.” She wanted to see more technique from JoJo and that’s just what JoJo gave on stage during the competition. That’s why it was so confusing for fans when the routine didn’t place at all.

These results left JoJo in tears and concerned that Abby was going to be upset with her. Of course, Abby was disappointed but even viewers could tell that she knew JoJo was robbed when it came to how the judges scored her routine.

1 “Nothing More Annoying Than a Man” Trio Dance

Fans were upset with this competition loss for a number of reasons. At the beginning of the episode featuring this trio dance, Abby replaced Paige with Kendall, which was confusing considering Paige was always apart of the trio routines.

When it came time for the performance, Abby blamed Chloe for the spacing of the dance being off, even though it was out of her hands due to technical issues. To make matters worse, Abby was extremely harsh with Kendall post-performance and ultimately blamed her for the routine not placing.
