Dark Souls 3: Loretta’s Bone & Greirat’s Tragic Story, Explained

The titular darkness of the Dark Souls games may simply come off as a label for its dark fantasy setting, but these titles tell some of the most morbid tales in gaming. FromSoftware has consistently left its stories in the background of its games, but that doesn’t mean they lack depth. Instead, the developers leave clues for dedicated players to follow, letting them discover for themselves what’s happening in these twisted worlds. In Dark Souls 3, one of the most memorable side quests involves a lady called Loretta and a thief known as Greirat.

Greirat was known as one of the absolute best thieves around, and he even saw himself as a Robinhood-like figure for those suffering in the Undead Settlement at the base of the High Wall of Lothric. However, when he climbed the wall in hopes to steal from the rich and powerful, he was imprisoned in a cell – from which the main protagonist frees him. He then askes the player if they can deliver a Blue Tearstone Ring to an old lady called Loretta in the town below.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

After exploring the Undead Settlement, players won’t find anyone by the name of Loretta down there. However, wrapped in cloth and hanging over a balcony is the corpse of a woman holding a bone. After cutting it down from its rope and retrieving the item on the corpse, players will realize this is the corpse of Loretta herself, and as such there is no way to proceed but to let Greirat know of her untimely demise. While it’s easy to follow exactly what’s happening, it’s a moment comparable to the saddest parts of the Dark Souls games like the story of Blighttown or the tragedy of Pinwheel.

How Losing Loretta Influences Greirat In Dark Souls 3

Greirat retreated to Firelink Shine, and the player returns there to inform him of Loretta’s unfortunate fate. Greirat at first seems to accept her death, but it doesn’t take long for the consequences of it to settle in. At this point, players can find Greirat curled up in a ball, unable to even notice his friend has approached him. After he gets over his crippling depression, Dark Souls 3‘s Greirat offers to go out into the world and find loot to bring back for the player. At first he raids the undead settlement for resources, but when he attempts to go to Irithyll, he ends up finding himself in grave danger.

Unless Dark Souls 3 players notify Patches of Greirat’s destination, the poor thief will meet his end down there at the hands of mutant, spider-like monsters. After surviving this pillage session, he offers to head to Lothric castle itself to obtain more loot for the player, but even Patches fears Lothric Castle too much to go out and rescue him yet again. Greirat dies there, but the saddest part about his story is that he likely wanted things to end like this.

It’s unclear exactly who Lorreta was (and why, according to her item’s description, her bone had “several holes bored into it“) or why Greirat was so attached to her, but her death had such an intense effect on his mental health that he threw caution to the wind likely to end his life in what he saw to be a meaningful way. Dark Souls 3 might keep a lot of its plot elements on the back burner, but the story of what happens to Greirat because of Loretta’s death occurs right in front of players.
