Actor David Duchovny says he’d never say no to returning to The X-Files. Since 1993, the actor has portrayed the famed F.B.I. agent Fox “Spooky” Mulder, teaming up with Agent Dana Scully, played by Gillian Anderson, to tackle the bureau’s strangest unsolved cases. Created by Chris Carter, the show ran for nine seasons, before returning for a shortened “revival” for seasons ten and eleven. In addition, the show spawned two feature films, including 1998’s The X-Files: Fight The Future and 2008’s The X-Files: I Want To Believe.
The series was a cultural phenomenon, and both Duchovny and Anderson became synonymous with the show, which featured a number of characters and catchphrases that continue to be recognized today. In addition, the show spawned a number of tie-ins and merchandise, including an X-Files comic book series, video games, apps, collectibles, apparel and more. When the eleventh season ended in 2018, Anderson said she was done playing Scully and didn’t want to be “tied down doing one thing.”
For Duchovny, however, the journey is apparently never over. The actor famously almost turned down The X-Files role when initially approached, but thankfully agreed to do it, making it a legacy-spanning career move and he appears to be apt to continue. Speaking to ET Canada, The X-Files star said that he would never say no to returning to the role of Fox Mulder, stating that he wouldn’t “just say no” to something like that, despite Anderson’s comments that she’s finished. “Maybe she said it just so that people would stop asking her. But for me, life is life: I don’t know anything about what’s coming, I don’t just say no to things like that. It’s not how I function.”
Both Duchovny and Anderson have worked in a variety of projects since The X-Files began, from TV series to features. Duchovny’s most prominent role outside of Mulder is his comedic turn as Hank Moody in Californication, which brought him multiple Golden Globe wins. Anderson has been in a wide range of projects in the years since, most notably the Hannibal series, American Gods, and The Crown. While both actors continue to find new projects to work on, the legacy of The X-Files continues to follow them wherever they go.
Arguably, Anderson has had a tad more success post The X-Files, so perhaps her desire to return to the role of Dana Scully is easily mitigated. For Duchovny, his perspective is different, leaning into the potential of playing Mulder again in the future. The recent X-Files revival show had ups and downs, but there’s certainly room for these characters to return in some incarnation or another, be it another revival series, feature or spinoff. It’s entirely possible that Duchovny could front a Mulder solo show, but given the legacy of the characters together, it’s likely that would be an issue for fans. The truth is out there, but it may be a while before it finds Mulder and Scully together again.
