DC Comics Put a Twist on the Spider-Man Pointing Meme

Warning: contains major spoilers for Batman: Wayne Family Adventures: Ep. 4!

The Spider-Man pointing meme has become so famous that it is canon in Marvel Comics. However, now it is also canon in DC Comics, with a twist thanks to Batman: Wayne Family Adventures on Webtoon. Batman and one of his wards have replicated the meme and made it their own.

This meme hasn’t ceased to amuse the internet, as it continues to make appearances with ever-evolving twists. Originating from a still of Spider-Man, the animated series from the 1960s, this image features the titular character and an impersonator pointing at each other. Now, DC’s partnership with Webtoon has resulted in the latest iteration of one of the most popular Marvel memes. This one sees Batman catching one of his family members stealing from him.

Created by the team of StarBite (Rhett Bloom), CRC Payne, Kielamel Sibal, Lan Ma, C. M. Cameron, and Camille Cruz, the fourth episode the Batman: Wayne Family Adventures pits Batman against a former Robin. After receiving an alert about one of his safe houses being broken into, the Dark Knight goes after the culprit. He arrives to find the location largely empty – until the toilet flushes and he realizes who he is up against. This surprising encounter turns into DC’s take on Spider-Man’s infamous meme.

Jason Todd has been behind the break-ins to Batman’s safe houses. When he comes out of the bathroom, he and his former mentor immediately point fingers at each other. Both are naturally surprised about finding the other here. It is one thing to metaphorically point fingers when assigning blame, but another to actually be able to literally point them. Considering the serious tone of many of the Bat-Family’s adventures, this new Webtoon provides the perfect opportunity to let the creators be a little more goofy and humorous with the stories they are telling with these characters.

There are so many little adjustments made to the meme, though the spirit is still the same. There are still crates – fitting since Batman’s safe houses also serve as storage spaces for his gear. However, Batman isn’t seeing himself or even an imposter of him. In general continuity, Jason Todd is not Batman’s direct successor. An alternate Jason DID take up Bruce’s mantle on Earth-15, but this isn’t that Jason as far as anyone knows. Dick Grayson is usually the immediate successor. It is true that Batman’s wards did all follow in his footsteps though. They aren’t duplicates of him, but they certainly know many of his tricks and habits. If the eldest former Robins wanted to impersonate him, they absolutely could. Considering all of their training, in a roundabout way this is like looking into a mirror. Batman: Wayne Family Adventures captures the Spider-Man pointing meme in DC Comics masterfully.
