DC’s Suicide Squad Recreates Marvel’s Most Iconic Spider-Man Meme

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Suicide Squad #12

In the latest issue of DC Comics’ Suicide Squad, Ambush Bug meets his fourth-wall-breaking soulmate using the most iconic Spider-Man pointing meme. Having been recently recruited by Director Amanda Waller, Ambush Bug is all sorts of strange and obnoxious, offering up a plethora of meta-references and jokes just like Marvel’s Deadpool who also knows he’s a character in a comic book. As such, the new Suicide Squad #12 ups the ante by putting Ambush Bug and DC’s version of Wade Wilson together in the same issue.

In recent issues of Suicide Squad, Amanda Waller has been preparing her latest iteration of Task Force X for a big move, intending to take them to Earth-3 to defeat the evil Justice League known as the Crime Syndicate. Essentially, Waller believes Earth-3 is so corrupted that its population won’t mind her questionable methods so long as the world is saved (unlike DC’s primary Earth). However, Waller wants to be sure her team will be merciless and willing to do whatever’s necessary to get the job done. As a result, she’s decided to test her Suicide Squad against Earth-8’s Retaliators and Lightning Strikes, the respective DC counterparts to Marvel’s Avengers and Thunderbolts.

This includes Blood Pouch in Suicide Squad #12 from Robbie Thompson, Dennis Hopeless, Eduardo Pansica, and Julio Ferreira, the DC version of Marvel’s Deadpool. As a result, Ambush Bug and Blood Pouch square off right away while the rest of the Squad and Strikes battle it out. While Ambush Bug is suddenly sporting a very familiar blue and yellow combat suit with plenty of pouches reminiscent of the 90’s X-Force heroes, Pouch mocks Bug by saying he was funnier in the ’80s. However, they then recreate the classic “Spider-Man pointing” meme, asking each other the most hilarious question: “Why do you sound like an attractive Canadian?

While this is of course a reference to Ryan Reynolds who plays the live-action Deadpool, the joke opens up an extremely comical opportunity. While Ambush Bug has yet to grace the silver screen, it certainly seems as though Suicide Squad’s writers have made their fan-cast, wanting Reynolds to play DC’s own fourth-wall breaker which would of course be a super meta-joke in and of itself. Furthermore, the fact that Bug and Pouch brought the Spider-Man meme into the DC canon is brilliantly funny on its own.

Upon realizing how much they had in common, Ambush Bug and Blood Pouch actually spend the rest of the issue hanging out in the gutters of the comic page outside the panels, commenting on the fight until the Lightning Strikes are forced to flee. By the issue’s end, Waller elects to bring only the Bizarro Superboy, Black Siren, and Talon with her to Earth-3, leaving the rest on Earth-8 (DC’s version of Marvel’s 616). However, while the quasi-crossover between the Suicide Squad and DC’s version of their Marvel counterparts was exciting, it couldn’t hold a candle to Ambush Bug and DC’s Deadpool Spider-Pointing and bonding.
