D&D: Every Monster In Monsters of the Multiverse

Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse is an upcoming Dungeons & Dragons book that contains over two hundred and fifty monsters for DMs to unleash against their players. These include some of the most powerful creatures in D&D, such as demon lords, elder brains, astral dreadnoughts, and even the overpowered D&D cow enemies that threatened parties in the past.

The D&D multiverse is expanding, which includes the boundaries of reality loosening. In the older editions of D&D, the only way to travel to different planes of existence or alternate campaign settings was through the use of high-level spells or through Spelljammer ships. There were also magical portals, but these contained their own risks, and there was often no guarantee that the party wouldn’t end up in the Abyss by accident. Wizards of the Coast has revealed that the D&D multiverse will be expanding even more in upcoming books. Monsters of the Multiverse is one step in that direction, as it’s filled with creatures that can be dropped into any campaign setting, including homebrew ones developed by the DM.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Monsters of the Multiverse contains updated versions of monsters that have appeared in previous 5e books, such as Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes and Volo’s Guide to Monsters, as well as including some new entries. The book also contains over thirty playable races that can be used for characters. Monsters of the Multiverse has over two hundred and fifty monsters, which is more than any other 5e book, save for the Monster Manual. The book will initially be released as part of the D&D Rules Expansion Gift Set, which will launch on January 25, before receiving a standalone release on May 17.

There are monsters in Monsters of the Multiverse that will be familiar with longtime D&D fans. The astral dreadnought first appeared on the cover of the original Manual of the Planes from 1987, Zuggtmoy dates back to the original Temple of Elemental Evil adventure, and both Demogorgon and Orcus debuted in Eldritch Wizardy, which was the third supplement released for D&D. These creatures have all been D&D mainstays, with some of them appearing as the final BBEG foes in epic D&D campaigns.

Wizards of the Coast revealed some of the differences between the new versions of the monsters in Monsters of the Multiverse and their original printed versions. A lot of the high-level monsters have been made stronger, in response to player feedback. The monsters have received new traits and many of the lore elements that tied them to one specific setting have been removed. The monsters are now listed in alphabetical order, save for the dinosaurs, which are bundled together. The stat blocks for spellcasting monsters have been reworked, in order to make them easier to run. An example of this can be seen in the errata for D&D campaign Storm King’s Thunder, where enemy spell slots per level were replaced with finite uses for each spell. It was also confirmed that all of the content in this book will be backward compatible with the upcoming books for the 5.5 update for Dungeons & Dragons.

Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse will be released as part of the D&D Rules Expansion Gift Set on January 25 and will receive a standalone release on May 17.
