Detroit: Become Human, Heavy Rain Dev’s New Game Uses All-New Engine

Quantic Dream CEO David Cage has revealed that the studio behind the critically-acclaimed titles Detroit: Become Human and Heavy Rain is building its next project with an all-new engine. This is especially exciting considering that Quantic Dream’s games won’t be PlayStation-exclusive anymore, releasing as multiplatform titles instead.

The first step towards multiplatform games by Quantic Dream was made back in March 2019 when it was revealed that the studio’s three well-known titles, Detroit: Become Human, Heavy Rain, and Beyond: Two Souls, were heading to PC via the Epic Games Store. That was a huge announcement, to say the least, given Quantic Dream’s long-running partnership with Sony. A year later, in May 2020, the trio of interactive novels was finally revealed to release on Steam in June.

The anticipation surrounding the next video game by Quantic Dream has just received another portion of fuel as the studio’s CEO David Cage revealed that the project would be built with an all-new engine. In an interview with Wccftech, Cage described this piece of technology as a next-gen engine in the context of discussing ray tracing in modern titles. It basically implies that the team at Quantic Dream will emphasize ray tracing in its future projects. The engine is developed within the studio as a proprietary solution, which allows the incorporation of any desired features that the team might feel necessary and suitable. It’s not something revolutionary for Quantic Dream though, as it’s been developing in-house technologies and engines throughout all of its 23-year-long history of making video games. According to Cage, the studio highly values its freedom in implementing new solutions over less-demanding usage of borrowed tech with external support.

This inspiring pursuit of creative freedom describes Quantic Dream’s internal culture perfectly as the studio finally became fully independent earlier this year. All the previous titles by the team were published by other companies, with Sony being the most recent partner of the developer, but all the future games will be created and distributed independently. That being said, Quantic Dream still has a publishing partner of sorts – publisher NetEase has owned a minority stake in the studio since 2019, which, according to a now-distant announcement, will help to reach a wider audience by releasing future titles on more platforms. How exactly this coincides with going independent is yet to be clarified by the studio.

Quantic Dream’s games have always been visually stunning, with the studio recreating the likenesses of famous actors that portray characters in its titles, but the possibilities with an all-new engine are even more exciting. With ray tracing being able to create realistic lighting in virtual worlds, the future interactive novels by talented story-tellers at Quantic Dream are likely to become even more visually stunning and captivating than ever before – and that’s already enough to look forward to the next announcement by the studio.
