Diablo 2: Resurrected Server Login Issues Continue To Plague the Game

Editor’s Note: A lawsuit has been filed against Call of Duty publisher Activision Blizzard by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, which alleges the company has engaged in abuse, discrimination, and retaliation against its female employees. Activision Blizzard has denied the allegations. The full details of the Activision Blizzard lawsuit (content warning: rape, suicide, abuse, harassment) are being updated as new information becomes available.

Continuing since last week, Diablo 2: Resurrected server connection issues are continuing days after the problem was acknowledged and allegedly fixed by developer Blizzard. Diablo 2: Resurrected came as a surprise when it was finally officially announced earlier in the year. With the release date of the Diablo 4 still unknown and mobile game Diablo Immortal delayed to 2022, the series will only see the Diablo 2 remaster’s release in 2021.

Luckily, the remaster of the series’ arguable fan favorite entry turned out to be much better than Blizzard’s previous attempt at a remaster with Warcraft 3: Reforged, which was panned by critics and players alike. Meanwhile, Diablo 2: Resurrected has been generally received well by both groups and seen users flock back to the overhauled classic. It not only brings the game closer to modern standards with the introduction of upgraded visuals and several gameplay improvements, but it also keeps old-school Diablo 2 intact – for better and worse. Unfortunately, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing for the dungeon crawler since launch.

Monday morning, Blizzard Customer Support gave a Twitter update on the ongoing Diablo 2: Resurrected server outage first confirmed on October 9. Unfortunately, the news is still not good, as the studio revealed it was still investigating the issue and thanked the game’s community for its patience. This is after the studio performed emergency maintenance over the weekend and seemingly resolved the issues twice previously. The latest Blizzard tweet didn’t say when players can expect to be able to jump back into the game, so it seems servers are still down at publication time.

It’s unclear why Diablo 2: Resurrected servers are down, and matters may be complicated by the fact that the game is handled by two studios. The front-end and actual client for the game is developed by Vicarious Visions, the Blizzard studio which previously worked on Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 before being absorbed by the Diablo publisher. Diablo 2: Resurrected ’s back-end – including its servers and integration with Battle.net – is handled by Blizzard itself. For now, players will have to wait until the studio gives its next update on the matter.

It’s unfortunate Diablo 2 is experiencing server issues almost a month after it was released, and even more so that logins are still impossible for many days after they were initially reported and supposedly fixed. This isn’t the first time players have faced server-related problems with the game, however, as a previous instability made Diablo 2: Resurrected characters go missing for affected users. Hopefully Vicarious and Blizzard are able to identify the server issues and permanently resolve them sooner rather than later.

Diablo 2: Resurrected is available on PS5, PS4 Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
