Diego Luna Confirms Star Wars: Andor Show Has Finished Filming

Diego Luna, star of Disney+’s upcoming Star Wars spinoff series, Andor, says that filming has wrapped for the show. Luna portrays the titular protagonist Cassian Andor in the series, who was previously one of the co-leads of 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story alongside Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso. Andor will chronologically take place prior to the events of Rogue One during the early years of the Rebellion. While the show’s specific plot details are still largely under wraps, synopses for Andor describe it as a “rousing spy thriller.”

Andor is one of five Star Wars streaming series planned to release next year on Disney’s streaming platform. While each series will vary greatly in tone and subject matter, the one thread that they all share is that they will flesh out eras between the three primary Star Wars trilogies. The era in which Andor takes place (between Episodes III and IV) has received a steady flow of new content ever since 2014’s animated series, Star Wars: Rebels. Both Rogue One and Solo: A Star Wars Story also take place in this period, as well as the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi limited series (which is also expected to release next year).

Although Andor has yet to receive an official release date, Luna confirms that the series has wrapped filming. In an interview with Deadline, the actor says that the show is “done with the shooting now,” and that the post-production crew is “getting it ready for audiences to see it.” Check out Luna’s full comments below:

To be honest, it’s been such a blessing to do this job and to do it under these circumstances. I had the chance to work with a team that I couldn’t be more proud of and admire more. It’s a hard-core moment to be out there shooting, and we were really lucky. We’re done with the shooting now and getting it ready for audiences to see it.

Filming for Andor has been unique compared to Disney+’s previous Star Wars shows. Although The Mandalorian shot on-location for a handful of episodes, both it and the upcoming Book of Boba Fett relied heavily upon The Volume for virtual sets that could be shot in a controlled indoor environment. Andor, on the other hand, was largely filmed on-location in the United Kingdom, leading to many leaked pictures of Andor’s physical outdoor sets. The film’s crew has yet to disclose to what extent (if at all) Andor has filmed in The Volume.

When Disney first announced their plans for a Cassian Andor-centric spinoff, reactions were somewhat tepid. Rogue One may have been one of Lucasfilm’s more well-received projects since the Disney buyout, but the film nevertheless received criticism for its two-dimensional protagonists. While skepticism is understandable, shows like Star Wars: The Bad Batch have demonstrated that the studio is capable of writing compelling new stories for characters that were previously underwritten. Hopefully Andor will be able to make a compelling character out of Luna’s dashing Rebel spy.
