Doctor Who: 10 Characters Fans Want To See Return In Future Seasons

Doctor Who has been running since 1963, making it the longest-running science-fiction drama of all time. In this long period of time the show has not only had 13 different full-time incarnations of the titular Doctor, but the show has also had countless other characters, whether they be companions, villains, or anyone in-between.

However, due to this vast library of characters, fans will always be clamoring to see one particular character return, whether it be from the classic era of the show or from the modern reincarnation of the series.

This article will list 10 characters fans want to return to Doctor Who.

10 Susan

Susan Foreman was the original companion and granddaughter of William Hartnell’s 1st Doctor. While the character did return in two specials during the classic era of Doctor Who, Susan is yet to make an appearance in the revival. Though both the 10th and 11th Doctors have referenced her in comics, suggesting that they don’t know is she is alive or that she is ‘lost.’

It is clear that, if the character were to return, it would be momentous both for fans of the show and for the Doctor herself, would be overcome with emotions after realizing her granddaughter is alive.

9 Omega

Omega, along with Rassilon, is one of the most important Time Lords of all time. Along with the aforementioned Rassilon, Omega was the founder of Time Lord society, but after Omega was pulled into a parallel universe after a failed experiment, Omega is said to have gone mad from the isolation.

It would be interesting to bring back Omega, not only because it would give us another villainous Time Lord in the revival era of Doctor Who, but also because Omega’s return ought to also bring with it more lore surrounding Time Lord’s and their powers.

8 The Rani

The Rani is a character who is always featured in fan theories, but never actually appears in the revival of the show. For those who have only watched the revival, the Rani is a mischievous Time Lord who knew both the Doctor and the Master as children. The Rani was known for her coldness and her cruelty, with the character capable of enslaving entire worlds for her experiments.

Surely it will only be a matter of time before the Rani appears in the revival of Doctor Who, other villainous Time Lords have made their return, such as the Master and Rassilon, so it is only fair that Rani will get her chance.

7 Amy Pond

While Amy Pond may be ‘trapped’ in New York after the touch of a Weeping Angel sent her back in time, this shouldn’t stop some ‘timey wimey’ event triggering a return for the beloved character. That being said, the only thing that may prevent a return for the character is Karen Gillan’s Hollywood career, which is certain to take up most of her schedule.

If Karen Gillan could make the time to return, however, it would certainly prove to be a fantastic and monumental episode of Doctor Who.

6 Ace

Ace was the companion to the 7th Doctor in what would prove to be the final season of the classic run of Doctor Who. Despite the fact that the 7th Doctor’s run on the show is well-remembered by fans, it was still not enough to prevent the show from going on hiatus until 2005.

A return for Ace would certainly be welcomed among fans of the classic series. It would be interesting to see how much the character has changed since her rebellious youth phase.

5 Jenny

Many fans thought that Jenny would play a more prominent role in the future of the series due to the fact that she was the Doctor’s daughter, but for some reason, Jenny only received the one on-screen appearance. This was a shame due to the fact that she also appeared to be a more ‘swashbuckling’ Time Lord.

It would prove interesting to see the character return, particularly as it would show her interacting with the current Doctor. It would certainly make an interesting story for Jenny to see that her father is now her mother.

4 Wilfred Mott

Wilfred Mott is one of the most loveable characters to have appeared on the show. Portrayed by Bernard Cribbins, Wilfred Mott was Donna Noble’s grandfather, yet also seemed to be a father figure to the Doctor as well, particularly during the events of the End of Time.

Wilfred Mott is such a loveable and fan-favorite character that it would be incredible to see him return and interact with another incarnation.

3 Donna Noble

Season 4 of Doctor Who was one of the most popular and well-received since the show’s revival in 2005, with the season finishing on a Dalek infused multi-episode story. This was not only due to the superb writing of the showrunner, but also due to excellent chemistry between Donna Noble and the Doctor. Therefore, it was a real shame that the season ended with Donna losing all her memories with the Doctor, unable to see him again.

While it could prove canonically difficult to have Donna Noble return to the show, it would be incredible should it actually happen and fans would certainly love to see Donna interact with another incarnation.

2 Canton Everett Delaware III

While Canton did not have much time on the show, he certainly left a very good impression among fans of Doctor Who. The character appeared in season 6 of the show, working for the FBI under President Richard Nixon. The actor has expressed his desire to return to the show, so it is only up to the writers to develop a compelling story.

Perhaps the character could return when the Doctor meets a post-Nixon President, with Canton still working for the FBI, but in a more advanced position.

1 Martha Jones

Freema Agyeman’s Martha Jones had a mountain to climb in her first season of Doctor Who. Not only was Martha Jones a new companion, but she was also replacing Rose Tyler, a beloved and fan-favorite companion who was, for many, the first companion for new viewers.

Fortunately, Agyeman’s fantastic performance of the wonderfully written Martha Jones was very successful with fans. The main issue, however, is that Martha was only given one full season, with smaller appearances in later seasons. If there’s one companion who deserves a return to the show, it’s Martha Jones.
