Does Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald Have An End-Credits Scene?

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald expands the Wizarding World of Harry Potter – but does it have an end-credits scene teasing the next movie in Warner Bros. and J.K. Rowling’s franchise? The studio kicked off the Harry Potter prequel franchise in 2016 with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which followed Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) as he tracked magical creatures around New York City to prevent them from exposing wizards to no-majs (non-magical folks). The movie also introduced the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) and set the stage for a series of movies that would deal with his rise and fall from power.

When the Harry Potter prequel series was announced, it was originally meant to be a trilogy. However, now Rowling and Warner Bros. are planning a five-movie Fantastic Beasts franchise, with The Crimes of Grindelwald serving as the second installment. The sequel to Fantastic Beasts sees Newt return and track even more magical creatures, this time in Paris, while further showcasing how Grindelwald wins followers to his cause. (Grindelwald aims to expose wizards to the world at large and rule over non-magical people “for the greater good” of humanity.) The movie also introduces a younger version of Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law), whose story is inextricably linked with Grindelwald’s.

Now that the movie is hitting theaters, Harry Potter fans may be wondering whether they need to stick around through the credits for an additional scene or a tease of the next film in the prequel franchise. However, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald does NOT have a mid-credits or end-credits scene. In true Harry Potter franchise tradition, the Fantastic Beasts sequel wraps up entirely before the credits begin to roll.

The original eight-movie Harry Potter series didn’t include post-credits scenes – perhaps in part because it pre-dated their current popularity in Hollywood – and neither did Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. As a result, it’s not surprising The Crimes of Grindelwald doesn’t have an end-credits scene. But, since Fantastic Beasts is slightly separate from Harry Potter, and isn’t adapted from a series of books, the prequel films could arguably forge a new path and start using post-credits scenes. That doesn’t seem to be the case, but it could change with upcoming installments of the Fantastic Beasts franchise.

With that said, the future of the Fantastic Beasts series is being questioned by some. Certainly Harry Potter is a massively popular brand, and Warner Bros. no doubt gave the prequel the green light because it was almost assured to be a financial hit, no matter the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them reviews. Sure enough, Fantastic Beasts earned over $800 million at the box office, and received mostly favorable reviews. However, The Crimes of Grindelwald reviews haven’t been as kind. In fact, The Crimes of Grindelwald has the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score of any Harry Potter movie, currently holding a 52 percent rating. It remains to be seen if the Harry Potter brand truly is strong enough to make The Crimes of Grindelwald a success. And, if not, it’s unclear what’s next for the Fantastic Beasts franchise.

For now, all moviegoers need to know is that Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald doesn’t have an end-credits scene. Fans will have to wait and see what comes next for Warner Bros. and Rowling’s Wizarding World franchise.
