Dragon Ball’s Krillin Steals Aang’s Look In This Avatar: The Last Airbender Mashup

Krillin from Dragon Ball steals the look of Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender in this crossover fan art. Based on the manga of the same name and first premiering in 1986, Dragon Ball is a long-running anime series that primarily follows the character, Goku, as he spends his life training and fighting as a super-powered martial artist. Avatar: The Last Airbender is an American cartoon heavily inspired by the style of Japanese anime that’s about a young boy, Aang, and his journey to fulfill his destiny as his world’s savior, the Avatar. Of course, each series covers a lot more ground than any short summary could hope to express, and that depth of story is a large part of the appeal for both shows.

Dragon Ball found its audience in America thanks to airings of English-dubbed episodes of Dragon Ball Z during the after school programming block, Toonami, on Cartoon Network in the 1990s. Since then, Dragon Ball‘s popularity in the states has only grown, with its most recent series, Dragon Ball Super, having also aired on Cartoon Network (now during the late night programming block, Adult Swim), while a feature film sequel, Dragon Ball Super: Broly, was released in U.S. theaters. Avatar: The Last Airbender aired on Nickelodeon from 2005-2008 and was a huge success for the network, earning itself a sequel series, The Legend of Korra. Recently, the addition of the original Avatar program to Netflix has reignited interest in the Avatar series. So much so, that an innocent mistake has led to this awesome mash-up.

In a post on Reddit, user filmememore shared an illustration of theirs that depicts Krillin from Dragon Ball with Aang’s iconic arrow tattoo and wearing traditional airbender attire. Take a look, below.

The inspiration for filmememore’s artwork appears to have stemmed from popular streamer, PewDiePie, misidentifying an image of Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender as being of Dragon Ball‘s Krillin. And to be fair, looking at this artwork that styles Krillin as Aang, it’s easy to see how he could make that mistake. Not only are they both bald, but they are diminutive, tough fighters who don’t let their size hold them back. Their physical appearances aren’t where the similarities end, either, because both Aang and Krillin are loyal characters who repeatedly stick their necks out for their friends. Both are also pretty funny, often telling jokes or making fools of themselves to cheer up others. Honestly, though the idea began with a mix-up, mashing up characters like Aang and Krillin actually makes a lot of sense.

It’s very unlikely there will ever be any sort of official crossover between Dragon Ball and Avatar: The Last Airbender, but with each show’s focus on martial arts and fighting, they would be a good fit. In any case, fans can continue imagining what a combination of the two shows would look like, and possibly even debate who would be more powerful – a Super Saiyan, or the Avatar?
