Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam Will Not Include Hawkgirl

Dwayne Johnson confirms Hawkgirl won’t be included in Black Adam. While Black Adam’s DCEU debut won’t arrive until 2021, Johnson’s involvement with the project stretches back several years. Johnson began developing Black Adam in 2008 with dreams of starring in it, but the process has been rather slow. Finally, however, Black Adam is finally making real progress, with production expected to begin next year. As that start date gets closer, Johnson has been eagerly hyping up Black Adam, which will also star Noah Centineo as Justice Society of America member Atom Smasher.

Johnson and Centineo participated in DC FanDome yesterday, where they shared some new reveals about Black Adam. While they didn’t have any footage to show, Johnson narrated a concept art trailer that discussed Black Adam’s origins as a former slave who becomes an extremely powerful seeker of justice. Johnson was also able to reveal which JSA members will be included in Black Adam, as fans had been very curious. In addition to Atom Smasher, the three characters making their big screen debuts are Hawkman, Doctor Fate, and Cyclone.

Of course, when one mentions Hawkman, it’s expected that Hawkgirl won’t be far behind. However, the DC hero wasn’t included during Black Adam‘s panel, leading some fans to question where she is. Johnson responded to one fan and explained that while Hawkgirl was “[100%] in our original JSA team,” something happened behind the scenes that prevented her from joining. Johnson promised to share the story at a later date and concluded that “it opened up the door for another awesome opportunity for another actress to come in and crush the role of Cyclone.”

It almost sounds like there were some kind of rights issues that prevented Hawkgirl from being in Black Adam, but that seems unlikely considering the character has appeared in various television shows and animated films. Therefore, it’s unclear as to what could have prevented her from appearing in Black Adam, but fans might get to find out in the future if Johnson is allowed to tell them. It bodes well that Johnson is enthusiastic about the addition of Cyclone instead, and it’ll be interesting to see how this big screen JSA comes to life.

Now that the characters have been revealed, there’s a lot of curiosity surrounding who will actually be playing them. So far, Johnson and Centineo are the only people confirmed for Black Adam, though Johnson recently had some fun joking that Ryan Reynolds would be playing Hawkman. DC FanDome would’ve been the perfect opportunity to announce the additional actors, but as that didn’t happen, it might be a bit longer before Warner Bros. opts to drop that news. Perhaps the studio is waiting for production to begin to ensure that there are no last minute changes. Nevertheless, fans are excited to meet Black Adam‘s JSA, so hopefully it won’t take too long.
