Every Army of the Dead Character Cameo In Army Of Thieves

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Army of Thieves.

Netflix’s Army of Thieves features a few cameos from characters that were first introduced in Zack Snyder’s predecessor Army of the DeadAs the latest addition to the growing franchise, director and lead actor Matthias Schweighöfer uses Army of Thieves to introduce new characters into the fray while giving fans a second chance to bond with those they’ve already come to love.

Army of Thieves tells the story of how Sebastian Schlencht-Wöhnert—formerly Ludwig Dieter (Schweighöfer)—later comes to join Scott Ward’s (Dave Bautista) crew in their Las Vegas heist. Sebastian’s life was stuck in a loop: get breakfast, go to work, go home alone, and repeat. The only highlight of his day was making videos for his Youtube channel, until a mysterious comment on one of his videos whisked him away into the high-stakes world of bank heists. Joining a new crew of skilled thieves, including Nathalie Emmanuel as Gwendoline, Ruby O. Fee as Korina and Stuart Martin as Brad Cage, the safe-cracker aims to pull off the near impossible task of cracking Hans Wagner’s legendary Ring Cycle safes.

Army of Thieves has received critical acclaim since its release. The prequel became the number one movie on Netflix in over 90 countries in under two days, mirroring Army of the Dead’s similar release success just five months earlier. The film gave Schweighöfer a chance to reprise his beloved Dieter—potentially for the last time—and give the character more time to shine on-screen. While the roles are minor, three more characters from Snyder’s first film make appearances in Army of Thieves, giving their actors a similar chance to flesh out their characters.

Dave Bautista As Scott Ward

Scott Ward and Maria Cruz recruit Dieter to their Army of the Dead crew as the team’s all-important safecracker, tasked with gathering a crew to steal $200 million from underneath the Las Vegas strip. In the final moments of Army of Thieves, Ward pays a visit to Gwendoline’s Safe & Lock Co. in Victorville, California. He offers Dieter $250,000 to open the ultimate safe—Hans Wagner’s Götterdämmerung. The Götterdämmerung is the piece de resistance of Wagner’s Ring Cycle, and the final safe that Dieter had hoped to crack alongside Gwendoline. This scene between him and Ward brings the prequel’s story full circle, in addition to setting the stage for the events of the first film.

Ana De La Reguera As Maria Cruz

Maria Cruz is Scott Ward’s right-hand woman. While looking to recruit a safecracker to bust open the Götterdämmerung in Army of the Dead, Scott turns to Maria Cruz to find them the missing member of their team. She brings Ward to meet Ludwig Dieter in Gwendoline’s Safe & Lock Co., and is present in Army of Thieves‘ final scene as the two convince the safecracker to join their team. This scene is pivotal in showing Dieter’s growth, as the first invitation to join a criminal group drove the character to panic attacks and audible gulps, while Dieter doesn’t hesitate to accept Ward and Cruz’s offer the second time around.

Hiroyuki Sanada As Bly Tanaka

In Army of the Dead, Bly Tanaka is the enigmatic casino owner that hires Scott Ward and his crew to break into the vault beneath the Las Vegas strip. Bly Tanaka is the man who owns all three of the Ring Cycle safes, as well as the legendary Götterdämmerung. In Army of Thieves, Tanaka only briefly appears as a photograph during Korina’s intel presentation on the Wagner safes. Still, his villainous presence can be felt throughout the movie.
