Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon’s popular Adult Swim series Rick and Morty has brought about a handful of video games since the series premiered in December 2013. Some aren’t too well-known, but this list will cover every Rick and Morty video game and how to find them.
Rick and Morty follows the adventures of a cynical alcoholic mad scientist, Rick Sanchez, and his anxious, diffident grandson Morty Smith. Rick drags Morty through different dimensions via a portal gun. They live with Rick’s daughter/Morty’s mother Beth, her unimpressive husband Jerry, and Morty’s teenage sister, Summer, in the Smith household.
The show is witty and well-written, and has been praised by critics for its creativity and humor. Roiland voices both Rick and Morty, and their dynamic is as entertaining as it is dysfunctional. The satirical, science fiction sitcom gained a huge following soon after its release, followed by an abundance of merchandise including a modest amount of games, but just a few video games. Rick and Morty’s Rushed Licensed Adventure
Rick and Morty’s Rushed Licensed Adventure is an online pixelated flash game that was made very hastily, implicit to the title. This simple point and click adventure game has 4 chapters, where the player starts off as Morty but can later play as Rick. Players can move using the keyboard and clicking on different items with a cursor. Users walk around, obtaining different objects in order to complete objectives. The game is full of comical dialogue, and Rick and Morty will often break the fourth wall, similar to the show. Although Rick and Morty’s Rushed Licensed Adventure used to be available on the Adult Swim website, it has since been taken down. However, it is still playable through third party websites if a flash player is installed.
Rick and Morty: Pocket Mortys
Based on video games from the Pokémon franchise, Pocket Mortys is a Morty battling and collecting game. Users play as Rick, and must go around defeating other dimensional Ricks to acquire their badges akin to collecting gym badges in Pokémon. The objective is to battle and collect as many different Mortys as possible. Like Pokémon, each Morty has a type or category that influences attack effectiveness — though Pocket Mortys is much simpler as they are either in the rock, paper, or scissors category. Released in January 2016, the game introduced an online multiplayer feature in July 2017. Pocket Mortys is available on Android and iOS.
Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality
Probably the most impressive Rick and Morty game so far — which really doesn’t say a whole lot considering the limited number of video games are all pretty simple by design — Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality is a VR game where users play as a clone Morty. Players must do menial chores around the 3D Smith household while Rick and Morty go off on adventures. True to the show, the game has some funny dialogue and more moments where the fourth wall is broken. Virtual Rick-ality was released on April 20th, 2017 by Adult Swim Games for Microsoft Windows. Developed by Owlchemy Labs, the game is compatible with HTC Vive, PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift.
The Past and Future of Rick and Morty Video Games
Besides a limited amount of amateur fan-made mobile games, this short list contains all of the current playable Rick and Morty video games. Rickstaverse was considered a “game” on Instagram where users simply tap photos to be “transported” (linked) to other areas (photos). However, the tags no longer work when tapped. Similarly, the monotonous Jerry’s Game for iOS and Android is no longer available, likely due to its lack of challenge as it was designed more as a joke to troll players.
There is still much room for improvement in the world of Rick and Morty electronic gaming. Thankfully, a new Adult Swim game is currently in the works. Rick and Morty: Clone Rumble will eventually be available for Android. Though no release date has been announced, it has been released for testing in select regions.
