The year’s first update for No Man’s Sky was released on February 16, and it brings a number of changes and new features to the game. No Man’s Sky Sentinel update is free to download for all players, and as its name implies, it brings with it a significant overhaul to the game’s Sentinels and other enemies, along with improvements to the combat system. Although exploration and resource gathering is the primary goal of No Man’s Sky, players are still bound to encounter hazards as they venture across the universe. Making battles more exciting and rewarding is a big step in making the game more enjoyable. From changes in gameplay mechanics to additional weapons and other items, here’s what to expect from No Man’s Sky Sentinel.

The Sentinel update is the latest of nearly 20 major changes introduced to No Man’s Sky since the game’s release, each of which has served to bring it closer to the ambitious promises given by Hello Games when the game was first announced. No Man’s Sky‘s release was highly criticized when it failed to live up to expectations for many players, but each patch has added mechanics that developers had initially been unable to deliver. Fully fleshed-out online play, more diverse world generation and improved building are just a few of the dozens of changes added since 2016.

2021 was a busy year for Hello Games, with major expansions like Companions and Expeditions adding pets, expanded missions, and even alien settlements to oversee in No Man’s Sky‘s Frontiers update. In the Sentinel announcement post on the official No Man’s Sky website, studio founder Sean Murray expressed hope that 2022 would be just as productive. The fact that the game’s first big update in 2022 is releasing so early into the year is a good indicator that there’s still much more to come for No Man’s Sky, but for the time being, longtime fans of the game have a brand new battle experience to master.

No Man’s Sky Sentinel Update Adds New Enemies

Alongside changes to preexisting adversaries like Sentinels, which can now deploy more unique forms of weaponry and utilize specific classes like Heavies, Summoners, and Medics, No Man’s Sky‘s Sentinel update added new enemies and challenges for combat-focused explorers. Sentinel nests can be found and cleared for generous rewards, and players interested in the lore of No Man’s Sky can learn more about how they came to exist. New enemies include the Hardframe Mech, which comes equipped with everything from flamethrowers and grenade launchers to a jetpack, and additional droids to help repair and shield other Sentinels. Enemies and creatures across all planets also have improved behaviors and navigational tactics.

Weapon Upgrades & Overhauls For No Man’s Sky

No Man’s Sky players can now upgrade and alter their weapons to explore interesting effects, utilizing things like stun and incineration abilities in combat. These can be added to existing weapons from before the Sentinel update or newly acquired ones. No Man’s Sky‘s Multi-Tool has new upgrades to explore as well, and other technologies like the Cloaking Device have been added to bring more variety to No Man’s Sky‘s combat experience. There should be something for everyone to enjoy learning to master regardless of their playstyle. Multi-Tool systems have also received a visual upgrade across all systems, including improved projectiles, lighting effects, and muzzle flashes.

No Man’s Sky’s Sentinel Update Introduces Additional Companions

The No Man’s Sky Companions update, released in February of 2021, allows players to adopt an alien creature to explore the galaxy with them. These companions can help find resources and protect players in combat, so it’s only natural that they should get an upgrade even long after the initial release of No Man’s Sky Companions.

The latest update introduces robotic AI companions, which can be reassembled and reprogrammed from preexisting materials or built from scratch. The maximum number of companions has likewise been upgraded from six to 18. Now, even players who don’t utilize No Man’s Sky‘s multiplayer functionality won’t have to worry about getting lonely while they explore.

New Stories & Missions In No Man’s Sky Sentinel Update

There have been several important story-driven missions added to the game with the release of No Man’s Sky Sentinel. One storyline sees players teaming up with the crew of the Space Anomaly, a mobile space station visitable to anyone with enough experience. Others revolve around raiding Sentinel Pillars, a newly introduced structure that appears in the form of highly-guarded control posts, to acquire secrets that help expand the vast and perhaps even oversized world of No Man’s Sky. As introduced in the Frontiers update, players who oversee an outpost will also have access to more missions.

Combat Improvements In No Man’s Sky’s Sentinel Update

Improvements to the feel and flow of weapons are the most considerable change in No Man’s Sky‘s Sentinel update, resulting in a faster and more dynamic-feeling experience. Some of the changes include changes to camera settings and effects like rumbling and screen shaking, faster weapon speed and fire rates for friendly parties and Sentinels, hit indicators, and adjustments to Sentinel health. By introducing players to a wider variety of ways to fight, Hello Games can work towards increasing the game’s replayability even among players who have been with it from the early hype and rocky launch of No Man’s Sky.

Minor Tweaks In The No Man’s Sky Sentinel Update

On the visual side, PC users can increase their performance by utilizing AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution, which No Man’s Sky now supports as of the Sentinel update. Those with compatible RTX cards on PC can also use Nvidia’s Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing to further increase No Man’s Sky‘s visual quality. The latest Expedition will also be launching shortly. The Exobiology Expedition will focus on alien animal life across the galaxy, offering rewards such as jetpack trails, companion customization options, and posters.

The number of Multi-Tools that can be carried at once has been doubled, increasing from three to six, allowing for more diverse loadouts that further help to improve combat dynamics. In addition, a handful of Multi-Tool upgrades in No Man’s Sky like the Neutron Cannon and Paralysis Mortar were added, and Multi-Tool caches and shops have received a visual overhaul. A new jetpack and multiple more minor improvements to mechs and walkers throughout No Man’s Sky also help improve ease of navigation, and tweaks to the build menu such as the ability to access multi-axis rotation have been implemented. Other quality of life improvements include faster warping and the ability to entirely clear a planet of Sentinels for a limited amount of time.

Like just about all of No Man’s Sky‘s previous updates, Sentinel is worth checking out for longtime players or newcomers looking to give the game a try for the first time. Hopefully, the rest of the new content coming to No Man’s Sky in 2022 will help improve the game just as much as the Sentinel update aims to. It can currently be acquired for free across all platforms.
