Everything We Know About Trolls 3

Universal Pictures’ confirmation that another Trolls movie is happening means means attention now turns to the Trolls 3release date, cast, and story details. DreamWorks’ first two Trolls outings have been a hugely successful venture for the studio, with Trolls alone bringing in a whopping $346 million across its extended 2016 box office run. While Trolls World Tour was a more modest success earning $147 million upon its 2020 release, this number is made more impressive by the context of its pandemic release, with much of this figure made via PVOD, and highlights the enduring wave of popularity that Trolls 3 will look to crest on.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The first Trolls movie centers on the titular and perpetually-happy creatures who sing, dance, and hug all day before being captured by the nefarious Bergens. The Bergens believe that they can only feel happiness by consuming a Troll, a notion that they are absolved of by the film’s end as Poppy (Anna Kendrick), Branch (Justin Timberlake), and the other Trolls win them over through the power of music. Trolls World Tour essentially extrapolates this message, with the returning characters visiting other Trolls’ cities worldwide to spread their message of positivity and self-love.

The Universal announcement for the Trolls 3 release date is welcome news for Trolls audiences, with some quarters fearing Trolls World Tour‘s lack of domestic success may have scuppered the franchise’s continued plans. Trolls 3 is also confirmed to receive a 17-day exclusive theatrical window before arriving on PVOD as a nod to the streaming success that propped up Trolls 2‘s release. Here’s everything we know about Trolls 3 to date, including the film’s release date, cast, and story details.

Trolls 3 Release Date

Universal Pictures has officially announced that Trolls 3 releases on November 17, 2023. As aforementioned, this date will mark the start of Trolls 3‘s 17-day cinema run before streaming audiences can also access the latest franchise installment. The previous Trolls outing, World Tour, enjoyed breakout success going straight to home audiences during the COVID-19 theatrical shut down in 202, earning over $100 million from digital rentals on top of its $47 million from box office sales globally, with these figures likely a key motivation in offering Trolls 3 as a PVOD option for audiences once again.

Trolls 3 Story Details & Characters

While those closest to the project have remained tight-lipped in the days following the Trolls 3 release date announcement, it’s highly likely that Trolls World Tour director Walt Dohrn will return to oversee this latest franchise addition. Dohrn penned an exclusive deal in July 2020 with animation powerhouse DreamWorks, in which the director has the first refusal on any animated projects from the studio for the foreseeable future. This puts Dohrn in the driving seat to return to direct Trolls 3, although no official announcement has been made yet regarding this.

There are also no story or casting details for Trolls 3, with more information likely to be drip-fed by DreamWorks across 2022 as production for the animated feature begins. Audiences will undoubtedly hope Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake reprise their roles as the loveable duo Poppy and Branch, though there has been no word from either star on this front to date. DreamWorks has not stated what Trolls 3‘s story will be about, although it is a safe bet to assume Trolls 3will double down on the musical fun and adventure that made its first two installments such a big success.
