Fast & Furious Hints At Ghosts: Is F&F10 Supernatural?

Ghosts might exist in the Fast & Furious franchise thanks to Fast & Furious Spy Racers season 6 setting up a tantalizing way to outshine the franchise’s trip to space in F9. Throughout the evolution of the Fast & Furious movies, audiences have come to expect the unexpected. Gone are the days where Dominic Toretto’s crew were street racers and criminals, as they’ve become international spies tasked with saving the world from massive threats. The franchise’s desire to continue pushing the boundaries of believability might now mean ghosts exist in the Fast & Furious universe.

Over the last twenty years of Fast & Furious content, crazy stunts have been at the forefront of some ridiculous stories. Viewers have seen cybernetically enhanced villains taken down in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, dangerous technology like God’s Eye be used in Furious 7, and cars designed for space travel in F9. On top of what the main movies have done to expand what is possible in the Fast & Furious canon, Netflix’s animated spinoff Fast & Furious Spy Racers has done the same. It is responsible for introducing Fast & Furious‘ underwater and invisible cars, as well as powerful cyborgs, but now there is a supernatural tease too.

During Fast & Furious Spy Racers season 6, Tony Toretto’s crew begins investigating a new mysterious threat who leaves almost no trace of who they are. While discussing the options for who could be behind the latest threat, one of Tony’s friends questions if it could be a ghost. It is a seemingly innocent and naive suggestion at first, but then one of the agents working for Ms. Nowhere’s secret organization lends some credence to the theory. He mentions the organization has ectoplasm emission readers and other devices that can be used to capture ghosts. Ms. Nowhere makes him stop talking before he says something he shouldn’t, but the agent still says that he’s probably said too much. This implies that the supernatural devices are functional and real weapons the organization has in storage, which indicates that ghosts are real in the Fast & Furious franchise canon and could even be used as a story escalation for Fast & Furious 10.

Since Fast & Furious Spy Racers season 6 reveals the villain isn’t a ghost and doesn’t confirm the presence of supernatural beings in the franchise, there is a chance this was just supposed to be a funny reference intended for the show’s younger audience. However, Fast & Furious introducing ghosts isn’t as ridiculous as it would’ve sounded years ago and dropping in teases like this without a pay-off for cheap reaction is a little strange. Beyond what the franchise has evolved into recently, there are theories that Furious 10 & 11 will end the series by using time travel. There is even a desire from some to see Fast & Furious crossover with Jurassic World, as they are both Universal franchises. If either of those ideas happen, bringing ghosts to Fast & Furious is hardly a step too far and Fast & Furious 10 also embracing a supernatural element would be the perfect way to deliver on the hype of going over-the-top that the franchise has long traded on.

Introducing ghosts in Fast & Furious would also be a fun opportunity for the franchise to go in a completely different direction. After all the massive action blockbusters, a supernatural Fast & Furious movie could show a completely different side of the cinematic universe. This could happen as new characters or members of Dom’s crew hunt down ghosts or have them confront a possessed car, similar to Stephen King’s Christine. It would certainly be a risk for the franchise, but one that could be a welcomed change of pace as well. In any case, there is now a small glimmer of hope that Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto could fight a ghost in future Fast & Furious movies.
