FF7 Remake INTERmission: Why [SPOILER] Isn’t Who We Think They Are

The INTERmission DLC for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade is finally out and it has some huge revelations in its ending. One of the post-credits scenes includes the return of a character, but they may not be the person that fans believe them to be.

[WARNING: Major Spoilers for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade below]

FF7 Remake was originally billed as an adaptation of the Midgar section of FF7, with the story fleshed out to fill the length of an entire game. The story of the game turned out to be a lot more different than fans envisioned. FF7 Remake ends with the main characters defeating the representations of their fate and battling Sephiroth a lot earlier than they normally should. Cloud and his friends break free from their destiny in FF7 Remake’s ending and are now going on an unknown journey, one that could take them anywhere in the world.

The ending of FF7 Remake also included a strange scene where Zack Fair is shown defeating the Shinra army and making his way back to Midgar with Cloud. Aerith has a vision of the two traveling back to the city. FF7 Remake’s Zack scene has a moment where Stamp (the Shinra mascot, who is a cartoon dog) is shown to be a different breed, suggesting his scenes happened in an alternate reality. The INTERmission DLC adds a new scene with Zack, but it has raised even more questions about the original story.

FF7 Remake: A Tale Of Two Buster Swords

The post-credits scene shows Zack traveling to the church in Midgar where he hopes to find Aerith. What’s notable about this scene is that Zack is carrying the Buster Sword, which he shouldn’t own, as Cloud already has it. Crisis Core explained the backstory of the Buster Sword. It was a custom-made weapon that was paid for by Angeal Hewley’s father, who gave it to him as a gift when he joined SOLDIER. The sword was so expensive that Angeal’s father went into debt to buy it, and died due to overworking himself. Angeal would later give the Buster Sword to Zack before passes away. Zack later gives the sword to Cloud before he perishes from the wounds inflicted by the Shinra army.

It is established in FF7 lore that there is only one Buster Sword and Cloud uses it throughout FF7 RemakeThis means that the Zack seen at the end of INTERmission likely comes from another timeline and isn’t the original version of the character. If Aerith’s vision at the end of FF7 Remake is true, then this version of Zack comes from a timeline where he defeated the Shinra army, so he never gave the Buster Sword to Cloud. This raises all kinds of interesting questions about the sequel, as it could involve characters from different timelines, but it also means that the original Zack is likely still dead.
