Final Fantasy 9 Sequel Is Possible As Devs Want To Continue Story

Fans holding out hope for a Final Fantasy 9 sequel have new reason to believe it could happen eventually thanks to an interview conducted with some of the game’s development team to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Final Fantasy 9 is widely considered by fans to be one of the best iterations of the franchise ever made, and has consistently been tagged by players as a game that could easily get the remake treatment.

With Final Fantasy 7 Remake such a success, it’s also possible that Square Enix will be more open to looking at other popular Final Fantasy games in the future as other foundations for significant remakes. However, while Final Fantasy 7 Remake does significantly change that game’s narrative in meaningful ways, it isn’t an outright sequel – that’s still something of a rarity in the series. More often than not, Final Fantasy games build out a deep, interesting world but only return to them after they debut with references in other titles like Final Fantasy XIV or other spin-offs.

Still, fans have been clamoring for something to happen with Final Fantasy 9 for years now, and a recent interview with Final Fantasy 9 character artist Toshiyuki Itahana conducted on RPG Site has hinted that it’s a possibility. The interview, which was done to commemorate the game’s 20th anniversary, dives deep into the development process for the game. Over the course of the article, which also interviews Final Fantasy 9 producer Shinji Hashimoto, it becomes clear that the team was very proud of the work it put into the original. In reflecting on that work, Itahana also comments on his desire to return to the series’ story:

Final Fantasy 9 is loved by the fans, but it’s also very loved by us, the development team. I would be delighted if, respecting the wishes of the original development team, there could one day be the opportunity to continue the story of Final Fantasy 9, which meant so much to all of us.”

Obviously, that statement is by no means confirmation that a Final Fantasy 9 sequel is happening – in fact, it’s probably evidence that it hasn’t even been much of a discussion up to this point, since it’s not even a teaser statement. However, what Itahana’s statement confirms is that the desire for a return to the world and story of Final Fantasy 9 isn’t just something fans want – the development team is on board with the idea too, or at the very least, some of its members are. Final Fantasy is a franchise that isn’t quick to give up on its past iterations, either, as even Final Fantasy XI is still going strong.

A Final Fantasy 9 sequel isn’t the only way players could return to the game’s world, either. While it would certainly be less climactic, Final Fantasy XIV crossovers with other Square Enix properties happen semi-frequently, and it’s possible FF9 could end up as a more prominent plot point in the MMORPG at some point in the future. Another alternative could be a Final Fantasy 9 remake in the same vein as FF7R, rebuilding the story and making it deeper while changing how fans interact with its characters. If nothing else, though, Itahana’s wish for a Final Fantasy 9 return is validation for diehard fans who want the same thing – and often scream from the rooftops about how FF9 is the best the series has to offer while waiting.

Final Fantasy 9 was originally released in 2000 for PlayStation 1. It has since been ported to PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Android & iOS mobile devices.
