Flash Movie: Why Michael Keaton’s Batman Still Has Burton’s Batmobile

The Flash will explore the concept of the multiverse in DC’s realm, and will bring back Michael Keaton’s Batman, who is still using the Batmobile from Tim Burton’s 1989 movie – but why hasn’t it changed in all these years? The superhero genre has become a very popular one in recent years thanks to big, connected universes like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC’s Extended Universe, with the latter choosing the multiverse path and bringing together almost all movies and TV shows from DC.

Although this has already been explored on the TV side of DC’s universe, it will be brought to the big screen in The Flash, directed by Andy Muschietti and with Ezra Miller reprising his role as Barry Allen. The Flash seemed to be trapped in pre-production for years, with different directors arriving and leaving due to creative differences, but it finally made its way into production in April 2021. The Flash is influenced by the Flashpoint comic book storyline and will see Barry Allen traveling back in time to prevent his mother’s murder, which brings unintentional and big consequences to his timeline. As a result of this and the multiverse, The Flash will bring back two versions of Batman: Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton, and the latter doesn’t seem to have changed much over the years.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Photos from the set of The Flash (which have now been taken down from social media) showed the Batmobile and Batcave that Michael Keaton’s character will use, and the former is the same one from Tim Burton’s Batman and Batman Returns. Burton’s approach to the Caped Crusader was a combination of realism and a comic book vibe, with the Batmobile having a very specific, rounder look that has made it stand out from other versions of the iconic vehicle. The Batcave in Burton’s movies has a similar vibe, and The Flash will bring back both, but a big question arises: why hasn’t this Batman changed his vehicle in 30 years?

While it’s entirely possible that he has made some modifications to the Batmobile on the inside, it’s still strange that the outside remains the same, and there could be a couple of reasons for that. Keaton’s Batman could have trouble letting go of the past, more so as it’s unknown what has happened in his life since Batman Returns, so the Batmobile keeping the same design might point at some trauma in Bruce’s life. On the other hand, it could be possible that this Batman retired not long after Batman Returns, which is why his vehicle has remained the same, as he hasn’t used it in years, but Allen’s presence and actions will force him to go back to his days as Gotham City’s vigilante. Outside this movie universe, it makes sense for Warner Bros. to bring back the Batmobile as it is as it appeals to nostalgia and will surely boost merchandise, as Keaton’s Batman is a fan favorite.

Fans will have to wait until late 2022 to finally learn how Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen will cross paths with Michael Keaton’s Batman and what the latter has been up to since his last big-screen appearance, and with that explain why his Batmobile hasn’t changed one bit. The Flash’s story and cast have fans excited over the many possibilities it can bring to the DCEU, and they are especially excited to see Michael Keaton as the Caped Crusader once more.
