Fruits Basket Movie Trailer Shows First Look At Tohru & Kyo’s New Scenes

A new trailer for the Fruits Basket movie reveals a first look at Tohru and Kyo’s new scenes. The popular manga written and illustrated by Natsuki Takaya was first adapted into a 26-episode anime series in 2001 by Studio Deen, which featured numerous changes to the story that the original creator disapproved of. A rebooted anime series from TMS Entertainment began in 2019 and was a much more faithful adaptation of the source material, which was well-received all around.

The movie officially titled Fruits Basket – Prelude will now expand upon the 2019 adaptation with some prequel content for the characters, including Kyoko and Katsuya, the parents of the series protagonist Tohru Honda. The two characters’ backstories from the manga were cut for the more recent anime adaptation. In addition to the prequel storylines, the Fruits Basket movie will feature new scenes set after the events of the 2019 series focusing on Tohru and Kyo’s continuing relationship. The cast and crew from the anime all reprise their roles for the movie.

The Fruits Basket brand has been a hit ever since Takaya’s manga was first published in 1998. The series tells the story of a recently orphaned girl, Tohru Honda, who is taken in by the mysterious Sohma family, which includes Yuki and Kyo. Tohru soon discovers the family’s bizarre secret: They are possessed by the animals of the Chinese zodiac and are cursed to turn into their animal forms whenever they feel weak, stressed, or are embraced by a member of the opposite sex. The title, Fruits Basket, comes from the name of the popular game played in Japanese elementary schools, which is alluded to throughout the series.

While the movie will include various scenes set before and after events the events of the anime, it will mostly be a compilation that retells the original story. The Fruits Basket movie will premiere in Japan on February 18 in theaters as well on home video on DVD and Blu-ray. An international release has yet to be announced, though given the popularity of Fruits Basket in the United States, expect it to release there eventually.
