Full House: 10 Things That Make No Sense About Steve

By the time DJ Tanner got to high school, she was dating pretty frequently and maintained an active social life. She went out with a few duds and mostly stuck with her BFF, Kimmy Gibbler. Everything changed when she met Steve Hale (who she dated once before when he was Steve Peters).

Whether fans love him or can’t stand him, Steve is an integral part of the Full House experience. All in all, he is a good boyfriend with a kind heart. Here are ten things about him that don’t make sense, even to the truest fan.

10 Background

One thing that fans never really learn about Steve is his background. He seems to be a California native who doesn’t hang out at home too often (he is always at the Tanners’). The high school lad is generally cheery and fun to be around, but he is reticent about his past.

Since his purpose is to be with DJ, it is okay for Steve to live in the moment. It would just be nice to know a little bit more about where he came from.

9 No Friends

Steve might hang out with his wrestling buddies, but his primary pals are his girlfriend and her best friend. When he goes to college, he becomes part of the community there.

However, there isn’t really a discussion on his friend group. Steve’s guy friends never hang out with him at DJ’s house. Steve and DJ don’t really go on group dates. There are definitely some questions about who Steve’s friends really are.

8 Identity

Just like his friendships, Steve’s very identity is a matter of confusion. Yes, he is a jock. Yes, he is a boyfriend. But what else is he? The teen is sensitive but silly, and he loves food.

Despite his occasional deep talks with DJ, Steve is a bit of a one-dimensional character. Perhaps it is best that way.

7 Wrestling

Viewers see Steve in action as a wrestler shortly after he begins dating DJ. Danny is so upset at DJ’s new distraction that he shows up at the high school wrestling practice. He is desperate to speak with Steve, but Steve is literally on the mat practicing. Unsurprisingly, Danny gets down on the mat in his work suit and starts wrestling with Steve.

While he is seen often in his letterman jacket, Steve doesn’t have many wrestling storylines. It would be cool to learn how he became interested in the sport, or to see where he hoped to take his wrestling career.

6 Intelligence

It is common knowledge that Steve is not the brightest bulb in the box. Steve’s perplexed state and Kimmy’s wacky exclamations often serve to make DJ look like the smartest in the group.

This is not shocking, but it seems a little unnecessary to dumb down Steve so much. While he excels in emotional intelligence, Steve clearly lacks common sense. He improves on Fuller House, though.

5 College

Steve’s college days are a prominent point of conversation. He struggles with the admissions process and has some serious discussions with DJ about the next steps in their relationship.

Ultimately, DJ’s high school world becomes more and more distant from Steve’s college world. They start to lose their spark and break things off in the seventh season. Steve loves college and seems to thrive in a challenging environment, but fans would have loved to explore more of his interests there.

4 Relationship with Danny

As with the wrestling incident, Danny has a tough time adjusting to Steve’s presence in DJ’s life. The initiation of the romance is startling to Danny, and the rapid development of chemistry messes with his mind.

Steve tries to be respectful and even distances himself from DJ in the beginning. While the dad and the boyfriend manage to operate on civil terms, their relationship always feels a little off.

3 Bottomless Pit

Even casual fans of Full House know that Steve is almost always eating. His typical entrance to the Tanner house includes a smile and a reach for whatever waffle or sandwich is left on the kitchen table.

The need for fuel fits in with Steve’s personality, but it can be excessive. It doesn’t make a ton of sense for a guest (even if he is a boyfriend) to constantly take food without asking first.

2 Breakup

Steve and DJ part ways amicably, but their breakup may not have been necessary. They find their way back on Fuller House after spending nearly thirty years apart from one another.

What if Steve and DJ had reevaluated their decision and worked on their relationship? Their lives could have played out so differently.

1 Plans for Future

Steve obviously enters the podiatry field on the spin-off, but he shows no inclination towards this career while in college on Full House. Viewers wonder what Steve’s dreams were way back in the 90s.

Maybe a Fullest House could provide the answer through a fun flashback.
