Game of Thrones Casts Borgen Actor as Key Iron Islands Character

[This article contains potential SPOILERS for Game of Thrones season 6 and the Song of Fire and Ice series.]

The Ironborns rise again as Game of Thrones season 6 moves to Ireland for a key scene involving a very important Greyjoy.

The fifth season of Game of Thrones did not feature the Iron Islands or the Greyjoys, which brought disappointment to many fans. Last time audiences saw the Greyjoys was when Yara (Gemma Whelan) tried to help her brother Theon escape the clutches of Ramsay Snow, but by the time they got to him, Theon was already broken and made to work for Ramsay under the name Reek.

However, it looks like the Iron Islands will once again be a focus for season 6, according to the Watchers on the Wall, as the series has been filming in Ireland with a major character:

“Sources report that Danish actor Pilou Asbæk will be playing the role of Euron Greyjoy. The actor was spotted shooting today with the cast around Ballintoy Harbour, in a scene that involved a crowd cheering for Euron.”

It’s important to keep in mind that HBO has not released the information about Euron as an official casting announcement, but considering he’s been identified as being on set, it’s pretty close. The actor who has been in the popular Danish political drama, Borgen, will play Balon Greyjoy’s brother Euron, who appears with a black eyepatch over his left eye and is captain of a ship entirely run by mutes.

But the information on casting isn’t all that came from the set of Game of Thrones today. Not only was Euron Greyjoy reportedly seen in the Iron Islands, sources from Watchers on the Wall, claim the scene in question concerned the Kingsmoot:

“Sources say that the Kingsmoot was at least partially filmed today. The scene was very visible from the cliff paths nearby. Yara was present for the scene, as expected. There was no Victarion, as we’ve also been predicting for some time.

Our source did see someone who appeared to be Aeron, playing the Drowned Priest’s role in leading the Kingsmoot and speaking often. They didn’t think it was the same actor from season 2 who appeared as a Drowned Priest, or anyone they recognized but it was difficult to tell for certain in this case.”

The Kingsmoot ceremony is held by the residents of the Iron Islands in order to choose a new king as chosen by their longship captains. The return of Euron Greyjoy could indicate he will be after the throne in this new season along with another key character’s likely death. Fans of the book will be pleased to see the show return back to a plot line that the series left in season 4. However, the Euron casting news might disappoint some book readers, as this disproves a popular fan theory that Euron Greyjoy is actually Daario Naharis, dubbed D=E. With the show moving away from so much of the books, it’s still possible that this fan theory may prove to be true, but book readers will have to wait until the next book comes out… whenever that will be.

Game of Thrones Season 6 will premiere on HBO in 2016.
