Ghostbusters: Afterlife Continues The MCU’s Paul Rudd/Baskin Robbins Gag

A new clip from Ghostbusters: Afterlife introduces a new threat while continuing Paul Rudd’s Baskin-Robbins gag from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Three decades after the release of Ghostbusters II and just five after Paul Feig’s reboot Ghostbusters, viewers will meet a new generation of ghost-catchers in Ghostbusters: Afterlife. This new adventure will be a direct sequel to the first two movies but focused on new characters rather than the team everyone knows so well, and after a couple of delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is set for a November 2021 release.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Set 30 years after the events of the second movie, Ghostbusters: Afterlife follows Callie (Carrie Coon) and her children Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (McKenna Grace), who after being evicted from their home move to a farm inherited from Callie’s late father (theorized to be none other than Harold Ramis’ Egon Spengler), located in Summerville Oklahoma. When the town experiences a series of unexplained earthquakes, Trevor and Phoebe discover their family’s link to the original Ghostbusters team, and decide to continue their legacy by taking care of whatever is messing with Summerville. Joining them is Mr. Grooberson (Paul Rudd), a seismologist interested in the earthquakes the town has been going through, and he’s also at the front and center of a fun clip that continues a gag from a completely different franchise.

The official Ghostbusters Twitter account shared a clip to promote Ghostbusters: Afterlife that introduces new, tiny menaces linked to a really big one from the first movie while also subtly continuing a gag from the MCU. In the video, Mr. Grooberson is shopping and stops at the ice cream aisle when he hears someone scream. Instead of investigating, he continues shopping and in a different aisle, he comes across a bag of Miniature Stay-Puft Marshmallows, from which a seemingly innocent Mini-Puft comes out. Mr. Grooberson approaches it and it bites his finger, after which a bunch of Mini-Pufts appear and chaos begins. But before the Mini-Puft madness, when Mr. Grooberson is choosing his ice cream, he grabs a Baskin Robbins one – and fans of the MCU will surely remember the connection between Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang and this particular brand.

In Ant-Man, Scott Lang is released from prison and has to look for a job in order to get his life back on track. Scott tells his friend Luis (Michael Peña) that he has a master’s degree in electrical engineering, so getting a good job shouldn’t be a problem – cut to, Scott working at Baskin-Robbins under the identity of “Jack”, as his criminal record would have stopped him from getting a job. However, as his boss told him, “Baskin-Robbins always finds out”, and Scott was fired when he discovered his real identity and that he had spent three years at San Quentin State Prison. Back to Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Mr. Grooberson taking a Baskin-Robbins ice cream is a subtle but fun reference to Scott’s time working for the company – and following the line of “Baskin-Robbins always finds out”, Grooberson’s trip to the supermarket to buy their ice cream led him to find out about the existence of the evil and extremely chaotic Mini-Pufts. In addition to that, Paul Rudd/Scott Lang was, at one point, added as the face of the Pentagon’s Baskin-Robbins, continuing the gag beyond the big screen.

Scott Lang’s Baskin Robbins scene is a fan-favorite moment that has been endlessly referenced, parodied, and turned into countless memes due to how relatable it was, and this subtle continuation of the gag in Ghostbusters: Afterlife only makes it better. Fans can surely expect the ice cream chain to join the promotional campaign of Ghostbusters: Afterlife at some point, further adding to the joke of how Paul Rudd seems to not be able to get rid of Baskin-Robbins.
