Ghostbusters: Afterlife Stars Share Their Favorite Bill Murray Set Stories

Ghostbusters: Afterlife stars Finn Wolfhard and McKenna Grace have shared their favorite Bill Murray set stories. Murray is a legendary actor and his lengthy career spans decades. Among many other classics, his filmography includes the original 1984 supernatural comedy, Ghostbusters. The star is not only known for his standout performances, but is also frequently at the center of many stories from his former fellow actors and crew members. From stealing French fries from strangers to crashing bachelor parties, Murray has proved himself to be the undisputed star of random encounters and anecdotes.

Filming for the latest installment in the Ghostbusters franchise, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, took place over the course of 2019. The sequel features the original Ghostbusters cast returning, including Ernie Hudson, Dan Aykroyd, and Sigourney Weaver, along with Murray. In addition to the original cast, Ghostbusters: Afterlife sees Wolfhard play Trevor Spengler, the grandson of late Dr. Egon Spengler (the late Harold Ramis), and Grace as Phoebe Spengler, Trevor’s sister. With the young newcomers to the Ghostbusters universe expected to share a fair amount of screen time, it appears they also shared some laughs with Murray during filming.

Speaking with ComicBook.com Wolfhard and Grace shared their favorite story involving Murray while on set of Ghostbusters: Afterlife. According to the young actors, Murray once “hired a bagpipe player to follow him around” on set on his birthday. However, Wolfhard explained that the ever-poker-faced Murray “pretended like he wasn’t behind him.” Then, during a lunch break on set, Murray sang an old Scottish anthem for the cast, which Grace said was “really beautiful.

Additionally, Wolfhard recalled that he and Murray shared a “sweet moment” when the pair discussed Wes Anderson movies and a Blues Festival in New Orleans while on set. The young actor says that he googled the festival’s lineup and the pair went through it mentioning “who [they] liked and who [they] didn’t know.” Fellow actor Logan Kim, who plays one of Phoebe’s classmates, also recounted a positive experience with the acting veteran, saying he was “freaking out inside” about meeting Murray. However, upon their meeting, the young actor said it was “just normal,” and Murray was “really, really funny.”

Part of the reason behind Murray’s mega star power is his penchant for telling jokes and having a good time. In the original Ghostbusters film, Murray’s character, Dr. Peter Venkman, is cynical and sarcastic, but secretly sweet-natured. Hearing the latest stories of Murray’s antics on set will surely fill any fans of the original Ghostbusters movie with joy to hear that both generations of Ghostbusters have gotten along so well in real life. Thankfully, audiences will once again be treated to Murray’s fun-loving nature on the big screen when Ghostbusters: Afterlife this week.
